I can see why some of the retired Treaders seem to be so damn happy. I had the day off yesterday and went for an afternoon ride on the legal side, mostly. The trails seemed a lot nicer without anyone on them. But still, I pretty much covered it all with only six and a half miles, including that east end HOA area that isn’t DFW, but isn’t legal either, and doing Serpentine twice. The poison oak was crowding the trail east of Oak Riparian Park, so unusual body English was employed. And I saw the biggest damn pack rat I’ve ever seen cross the trail right in front of my wheel back there. Flowers were gorgeous. That pano photo below is 180 degrees — the left side is pointing legally north, and the right side looks south upon the forbidden landscape, proscribed by yellow signs. As Woody Guthrie said, “on the back side it didn’t say nothing; this land was made for you and me”.

Have the authorities actually clearly marked the legal and forbidden zones?

Yeah, pretty much every obvious route onto the CHER property is posted.

Why does the map show bodies of water on both sides of the volcano?

I've rode out there Sun, Mon & Tue at 5:30'ish....keeping it 100% legal and getting in 10-11.6 miles and 1400+ feet of climbing. Sunday was empty, Monday was a zoo with walkers and the NICA crew out there and Tuesday was mostly empty. It's not as much fun with the absence of some great variety but I'm having more fun than I expected. The overgrowth is getting BAD I see a machete in my future and I may have to take a walk.

The one dark area looks like water in the satellite photo but is actually the quarry cliff face in shadow.

I know the picture is a Gardener snake.
Didn’t get a picture of rattler, too busy
cleaning my chamois.
