Several of us are going through Oregon withdrawl, so it's time to escape the summer heat and head up to 7,000' in the Sequoia NF for some primo riding that is similar terrain but is less than 6 hrs away. All three days are packed full of goodies including log rides up to 12' off the ground, jumps/hucks up to 5', rock features, and yes, you'll be riding in Sequoia groves.
Day 1 - XC riding w/ 3,000' descent
Day 2 - 2,000' climb/hike followed by 4,000' descent
Day 3 - More XC riding w/ up to 2,000' of climbing
The only downside is tent camping without showers, but this can be resolved with solar showers. Cheaper and way more fun than going to Mammoth, hands down. Estimated cost is <$150, but will depend on the carpool situation and meals we choose to eat at the campsite.

So... small bike riding?

I wish I had an AM bike.

It comes down to hucks & jumps and riding logs that determines which bike you'll be comfortable on. There are a lot at 18-24", less than a dozen up to 3', and only a couple in the 4' range. There's one sick Sequoia tree wall ride w/ a 6' drop, but even Pros pass it up. Couple of 4-8' gappers if you like. Some folks like riding logs w/ shorter travel bikes for more responsive steering. Trails have a lot of flow on what ever bike you choose. So it's really a toss up, but wider tires are always better. My first year up there I took my 29er and did a 4' drop on it, but nearly trashed the wheelset on a smaller 2' drop that didn't turn out well. This year I'll slog the xc parts on the Nomad so I can hit what I passed up last time. We're not out to break any speed climb records and there will be a lot of sessioning and photo taking, so the Slopestyle would be ok.

I've only ridden the heckler up there, Tara. Anything that the heckler can't handle I probably wouldn't be doing anyways :hello:

I'd love to join you. Sequoia has been on my short list since I saw your pictures from last year. However, I will be on a plane to Hawaii on the 23rd. Have another great trip!

After seeing/reading your Oregon adventure, I want in on this one. It may be shorter but I can swing this one.

Can I get details? I have to be in Brea/Irvine on Thursday the 22 and Monday the 26 so I will probably meet you there.
