This is Cancelled for obvious reasons. Saturday March 28, we will be doing a work day with the City on Monkey Flower. We will be working to fill/remove ruts and build a couple water bars to make this section of trail safe for the summer. We hope to have a good showing and represent the MTB community well, so we can have future trail work days that address areas that we are specifically interested in. https://www.calaveratrails.com/calavera-trail-work-day |

Today, Gabe, Will and I got out to work with the City of Carlsbad on Lower Monkey Flower. With some help from Mike Tully from CBad Parks Dept, we were able to knock out the repair to this section of trail within the expectations of the Park Dept requirements. We weren't allow to add any Berms, but we did add a couple water bars that can be entertaining. We also were able to naturally shape a few sections to add what we think is quite a bit of flow. Overall we knocked down and filled in the major rutting that had occured over this winter, added some water bars for future rut prevention and we added to and improved the flow of this section of trail. I'll say this, you will need to be heads up at the bottom because you will have more speed heading into the 4 way intersection. Here are a couple videos from our work. Thank you for your efforts. Too bad C-Bad's Park Dept won't allow the necessary changes....or re-routes actually because that, like most other trails in the legal Calavera is not sustainable. It makes zero sense that they would turn away expert advice (not from me but from people SDMBA could provide) and then have a lifetime of FREE maintenance from interested rider groups. |

Everything on City land is "mitigated" and monitored by numerous environmental groups, so we can only work within the existing trail footprint. Long term, we have some ideas to improve this section of trail, but those are things that will require winter work when the soil is more workable than it currently is. Even with the water truck, there is only so much that can be done at this time. |

This is literally the first step taken in building a relationship with the City. Bravo to Matt, Gabe and Will for being out there today taking this step. Once we do a few more of these the City will look to us as the Trusted Advisors and we will eventually get the trails we want. |
