Hello Calavera Hikers;
The Calavera Highlands Ecological Reserve Hike with Naturalists has been re-scheduled for February 2nd. I am starting a NEW Sign-Up List, so if you are interested in participating on 2/2/19 you must contact me soon stating your interest. I will then let you know if you made the list. I think it would be a great idea for a couple of MTB voice's attend this extravaganza.

Outrageous trail damage created by mountain bikers in the PRISTINE Calavera Hills Echo Preserve.

We need to FIND these people and STOP them ASAP!

Public Service Announcement. I usually encourage DirtTreaders to be extra polite to hiker groups. But in this case, I’d recommend staying well away from anything and anybody south of the CNLM-managed trails around the lake. It’d be a good day for trail work at Black Mountain, or a ride elsewhere.

Here’s what Preserve Calavera posted:

“There will be a hike on Saturday, January12, 2019, 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM, at the Carlsbad Highlands Ecological Reserve (CHER).

Meet at the intersection of Cannon Road and College Boulevd in Carlsbad (east of El Camino Real near Sage Creek High School). There is trail parking along Cannon Road.

CHER is a state owned reserve consisting of coastal sage scrub, grassland and riparian habitat. Join us and learn about the plants and animals found here...and how unauthorized public use can harm our protected natural lands.

This is a Sierra Club hike, space is limited.”

And here’s what the Sierra Club posted. Notice the slightly different wording, which tells you something important:

“Description: 8 to 11 am. This moderate-paced hike will follow various trails for about 3 miles from the parking area in a counter-clockwise loop. The purpose of this hike is to observe first hand: wildlife, sign/track and scat as well as the damage done by unauthorized mountain bike use. The group will include experience naturalists who will discuss and help us see the wildlife and identify the animals leaving tracks and scat.”

If you enjoy riding at Calavera and don’t want to kick off another crisis, consider your public comments.

Where was this actually posted? A sierra Club website?

Me n the fam did a hike out there today and noticed three men carrying a map that looked like a big screen grab of google maps satellite images. They seemed to be trying to find something. I saw them at the bathroom by the dam, then the headed down the paved road, turned east on the fireroad and went north on the Spine. We continued east on the fireroad and I did not see them again. It was just odd... perhaps fish n game planning their route for this weekend?

I was stopped this morning by someone who said they were with DFG. I was riding on the singletrack on the north side of the volcano that runs parallel to the lake loop trail towards the spine descent. There were three people walking in my direction and they stood in the middle of the trail as I rode up so I would have to stop. The guy in front who was in business casual attire informed me that this trail was off limits and that they are going to be posting signs and that the fine is $1k. He told me which trails are legal to ride, basically the lake loop, the trail to Oak Riparian Park and the fire road along the houses. I explained that I came up from the main trail and followed a sign with an arrow that said "trail" to get to where I was. lol There was a woman with him that had a DFG hat on and another guy that was wearing full on green uniform but he didn't have any patches or anything. Just a heads up. I'll keep riding it until I can't.

I wonder why the enforcement efforts now? (again..) It would be worthwhile to ask them that to see what answer they come back with besides "so & so told me to" :?:

^^^ Huh. I thought that trail was on the Carlsbad parcel run by CNLM, but it’s not.

If I bring my Binoculars and stop to look at birds does that count? What if I ride past a bunch of hikers and the ranger man singles me out? Is that discrimination based on my identifying Biking as my choice of nature enjoyment?

As long as they keep talking we are fine.
Signs blow away, trail destruction
is temporary.

If they start enforcement and ticketing,
things might get ugly.
