[edit: rescheduled to 2/2/19]

Public Service Announcement. I usually encourage DirtTreaders to be extra polite to hiker groups. But in this case, I’d recommend staying well away from anything and anybody south of the CNLM-managed trails around the lake. It’d be a good day for trail work at Black Mountain, or a ride elsewhere.

Here’s what Preserve Calavera posted:

“There will be a hike on Saturday, January 12, 2019, 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM, at the Carlsbad Highlands Ecological Reserve (CHER).

Meet at the intersection of Cannon Road and College Boulevd in Carlsbad (east of El Camino Real near Sage Creek High School). There is trail parking along Cannon Road.

CHER is a state owned reserve consisting of coastal sage scrub, grassland and riparian habitat. Join us and learn about the plants and animals found here...and how unauthorized public use can harm our protected natural lands.

This is a Sierra Club hike, space is limited.”

And here’s what the Sierra Club posted. Notice the slightly different wording, which tells you something important:

“Description: 8 to 11 am. This moderate-paced hike will follow various trails for about 3 miles from the parking area in a counter-clockwise loop. The purpose of this hike is to observe first hand: wildlife, sign/track and scat as well as the damage done by unauthorized mountain bike use. The group will include experience naturalists who will discuss and help us see the wildlife and identify the animals leaving tracks and scat.”

If you enjoy riding at Calavera and don’t want to kick off another crisis, consider your public comments.

Curious if they are going to trespass into the south side.

Maybe someone should notify DFW about this planned event...

Isn't this hike on these trails (mostly built by mtbers I'm guessing) a conflict of interest? Take their Sierra Club cards away and confiscate their dirty dirty cameras full of pictures of animal shit on our trails! The horror!

The hike was cancelled due to weather.
Might be rescheduled.
No clown shoes for the clowns.

There was a new post on MTBR yesterday about people seeing MULTIPLE Fish & Wildlife officials out near the volcano posting signs. The poster claimed that he was warned about riding there with potential fines of $1000.

I was out there as well riding my normal loop and never saw anything out of the ordinary. Then again, I usually don't ride anywhere near the trails that lead up to the top of the volcano.

I see two different prospective & desired outcomes from two different groups today.

First, I'll start with the Sierra Club

Their invite read: "The purpose of this hike is to observe first hand: wildlife, sign/track and scat as well as the damage done by unauthorized mountain bike use." I read this and it seems like their sole purpose was to find wrong doing by MTB riders. How MTB'ers terrorize the pristine wonderland of Calavera. Are they really trying to better the area or close it down? Is it an organized effort to close and then offer to development? Were they going to hike on unauthorized trails themselves? Do they even KNOW which ones are legal or who owned what out there? Were they going out there to see the families taking their kids and pets for a hike? Were they going to count the folks working on getting in shape? Maybe trying to blow of the worries of the day? Probably not at all which is sick & sad. They cancelled their event and as far as I know (admittedly is not much) did nothing. Might be a good thing in the end.

Second, I'll discuss the SDMBA and an effort to build new legal trails at Black Mt.

Lead by their VP  , Matt (aka BankerBoy), he had over 60 (yes, 60) volunteers show up on a rainy morning to donate their time and effort to build trails for all users. Even Sierra Club members are welcome to use them.
OK, so it was too wet to get the trucks up the hill to drop off pavers without doing damage so of instead of turning tails, they grab the tools, hiked up, and got to building the new Black Widow trail focusing on tread and drainage. Matt and the volunteers took the best option presented to them and did something POSITIVE. They weren't there to find blame, create a negative narrative, and report how the other side are evil people.

We saw two different groups preform two very different outcomes today. Which one do you support?

I was bummed to miss the Sierra Club hike.
Really wanted to hear what they said. And I
had a few questions and comments for them.

After riding Black Mountain a few times recently,
I really appreciate the work, time and effort put
in by you guys.

I never see Calaveras coming together like that.
It's too much a cluster and too many jurisdictions
involved.
Plus no one seems to want to head up an effort.
SDMBA tried to help for 5 minutes, but I think they
saw the same thing.
I'll ride Calaveras till I can't anymore and ride BM
as much as I can.
