I'm in the process of planning the Mongoose Family Vacation. A couple of places are standing out, Lassen Volcanic NP and Great Basin NP. I'm thinking about doing both parks with a stop in Lake Tahoe in between. I've heard Great Basin is awesome and is not at all crowded. But it is sure in the middle of no place and if it is less than awesome, that's a long drive back to anywhere. are there any veterans of these locations that might be will to impart some knowledge? We are leaving in the middle part of July and have about 10 days to explore.

A few years ago we drove through GBNP to get from Yosemite to Jackson Hole. We were on a schedule so we didn't stop to see much in GBNP. However, we did stop for a tour of Lehman Caves and it was awesome.

That, and driving a little too fast through the dips on highway 120 between Mono Lake and Benton Hot Springs. Never thought I could get a Honda Pilot airborne.

Sounds like a great vacation! I haven't been to the Great Basin area, but I remember that Bike (or maybe Dirt Rag) had a good article within the last couple of years talking about a bunch of nicely built singletrack there (the area, not in the National Park). I can't find that article now, but I did find this, which looks helpful:

Happy trails!

Thanks for reminding me. It was BIKE that did an article about Eloy NV's. attempt to drum up Mountain Bike tourism. No the question is can I find it?

I've been to great basin several times. The cave was very cool and the hike up to Wheeler Peak, 13,060 feet, is a tough 5 mile hike it's worth it . As I recall there's a campground down low along the stream and a campground up above 9000 feet that gets very cold at night
