On my trip back from Boise, I camped a night at Cave Lake, near Ely, Nevada. I have not been to a campsite that was quieter!

The lake looked pretty stocked w/fish - trout were rising left and right at sunset, and me without a flyrod!

I woke up the next morning and found that there was a pretty detailed map of the area (including mileage and elevations). I took a picture to help me navigate as I headed out to the (somewhat) unknown...

I started out with a counterclockwise loop around the lake, cruising down the Steptoe Creek Trail. It was a bit overgrown and I was definitely on the lookout for big animals...

I continued until an intersection and began climbing up the Twisted Pine Trail. The uphill was a pretty good grade super fun up AND down!

Before too long I started encountering some snow patches, they got more and more frequent until I was pushing my bike for a lot of the "ride".

The trails in the area are awesome, there's probably about 15 miles of mtb-specific and FLOWY singletrack in the area, all nestled around a beautiful lake...

In another few weeks I'm sure the trails would be solid and ready to rip. It is a haul from San Diego (9 hours +) but a great change of scenery and pace.

Camping was $17/night and included hot showers.

My parents eloped to Ely, Nevada back in the 50's. Man, they should have stayed there!
