Post subject:  Utah Riding Advice

Im going to be heading up to somewhere near Levan, UT for a week on a hunting and fishing trip in the end of October and come hell or high water am going to shove at the bare minimum a 3 - 4 hour MTB ride down a few guys throats. (cause they will be riding in my truck  ) Levan looks to be a little more than 3 hours past St. George for reference, 1.5 hours to Salt lake city. Is there any "cant miss" riding up that way? My buddies Im rolling with are in shape, but not regular MTB'ers so Im not looking for any major technical stuff preferrably a fun XC type with the awesome views. If our only choice is a more difficult ride then thats what we are going to do.
I believe they are going to make a day of fishing which I will turn into a day of MTB'ing. We are going to sit down this weekend and start figuring out all the BS involved , so if Gooseberry Mesa is where the riding is then I will figure something out, maybe leave a day early and spend the last day down there. I dont care if its a snow covered logging road or if Im riding solo thru a bear infested forest, I will get a good ride in while im in Utah. (If you have ridden with me you know I dont go fast enough to hurt myself anyway) This is happening the last week in October, me not knowing anything about the area is everything going to be covered in snow? I know there is a good chance of heavy snow where we will be at for the week.

TIA for any help.

I'd definitely hit Thunder Mountain if I were you.

+1. Per mapquest its 1.5hrs detour for you, but this is one of the most scenic trails anywhere, even non-biking people should be into it. Not too long, not too difficult. But you don't want to go near it if its been raining.

Other options would be Cedar City / Brian Head (will be cold due to elevation). But "C Trail" is close to Cedar City and would be fun, not as high up.

St George is right off I15 and has some awesome riding, lots of options and shouldn't be too cold (we rode there mid November last year).

Vegas/Bootleg Cyn would be another option if you can ignore that its not in UT.

I can help with more detailed questions if needed.

Yeah depending on weather Im not opposed to Bootleg... This trip is a ways out, so I am going to have a backup, as well as a backup to the backup plan ready to roll. I will hit you up down the road Ev. My main thing here was just to get an idea of what my options are and a general direction to do some looking into. Thanks!

Thunder Mtn is a must if you're driving that far north and since you mentioned not technical rides then Brian Head would be my second choice and would give you a couple of shuttle rides depending of what day of the week you'll be there.

If you want something quick and easy but with maximum slickrock, check out Prospector and Church Rocks right off the I15 just north of St George. I go here any time I even pass thru the area. You can get an outstanding ride in about 2 hours and park right next to the freeway.

Also just south of St George is a the Bearclaw Poppy and related trails. These are a little more off the freeway but definitely worth the stop if you are driving thru the area.

Check out the Utah Mountainbiking site for full details. Here's a little taste of what you'd get to play on at Church Rocks or Bearclaw:
