Favorite Trails: any dirt with a challenge
My wife is awesome! It was our last day in Sedona and I would have loved to get out for a ride but the logistics made it impossible. We had to pack and be out of the hotel by 11:00 am. If it was just the two of us, maybe, but there were the three kids and all their stuff to contend with. Accepting the fact I will be coming back here in the spring, I was not too crushed about missing the last day for a ride.

But not so fast there, Mr. Pessimistic!

“Go” she says. “I can handle the kids. Don’t worry about us. You have been wanting this and I have no problem with you going. Just go early.”

I already said it but I will say it again; MY WIFE IS AWSOME!!!

I map out a local loop from the hotel. It turns out to be an 18 mile loop.

Bell Rock bike path, Llama, Broken Arrow, Hwy 179 (road sucks), HT Trail, to Slim Shady.

Llama – Flowy single track through the trees at the base of a rock butte. A few challenges, mostly easy.

Broken Arrow – Good introduction to slick rock Sedona style. A few exposed areas and some decent chunk to keep you on your toes

Highway 179 – I couldn’t figure out a direct way back without using it. I could have added lots more miles on trials but I was short on time.

HT Trail – Great connector. Again, flowy through the trees with a “yahoo” thrown in for good measure

Made in the Shade/Slim Shady – True single track that lead up a wash, making for some fantastic and technical slick rock water fall climbs. I took it down the mountain after Highline a few days ago. There was a connector that lead up the mountain. Last time I took the low road. I took it this time. Climbed about 100 feet and had a nice ledge ride and slick rock descent.

So the pics….

I started the ride at 7:30 am. I saw a post about how cold it was here over T-day. I think I might have you beat. It started at 19 degrees in the shade. I was wearing armor just to keep my legs warm, two shirts and a hooded windbreaker. Come hell or high water, I was going!

Typical Llama trail

Since I was on my own, I don’t have any action shots. Here is my “I don’t have a timer on my cell phone but proof I was there with my bike” pic

Broken Arrow water fall. It was 6 ft. Pic does not do it justice. The trail is on the right. The ledge at the top of the trail is 2+ feet. Did not make it up this one. HAB

With the sun out, the air warmed up to a balmy 30 degrees. It was crystal clear and the leftover moon from the night before looked….

Well you get the idea…. 8)

Nothing on the HT Trial but a took a few on the Made in the Shade/Slim Shaddy trail. Another waterfall climb. It is on the left this time. It was about a 6 foot rise on an off camber slope that falls towards the chasm. Of course the pic does not do it justice. I made this one.

The last view back towards the town. I thought the trees framed it nicely.

The mountains directly above me..

The last ledge ride before I dropped back down to the Bike and Bean.

The loop in GE.

All in all, this was an awesome trip. Add the fact that I won some money at the Castle Cliff Casino the other day which covered a lot of our expenses, it will be hard to beat for a family trip. Next time it may be on my own so there are fewer constrains.

Drive time is only about 7 hrs, which makes it closer than Tahoe. As Arnold says “I’ll be back!”
