I threw some feelers out and it looks like there is some interest in taking a road trip in October to Sedona, AZ. It is one of the coolest places to ride a bike, hike, and hang out in the southwest. I'm thinking morning and late afternoon rides with a bit of hiking and touristing during the day (slide rock SP is on my list for sure). This will be totally family friendly for on trail and off (my wife, 6yr old daughter, and border collie will be coming and not riding, but we will hike for a few hours on the afternoons)

Dates: October 14-16 (I'll probably go out on the 13th)

Who to bring:
This is totally family friendly and pet friendly, however, anyone wearing a Borat banana hammock will be on their own

It is an 8 hour drive from San Diego, just a heads up to anyone who has not been before

Places to stay:
It would be best to plan to stay in the VOC (Village of Oak Creek) since that is where most of the trails begin.

La Quinta is a solid place that is pet friendly and generally pretty cheap, Red Agave has some chalet style places and suites that range from $127/night for the suites and $200/night for the chalet- they sleep 2 couples or a bunch of oversearved DT'ers, There's also a bunch of other places that I haven't been to that seem to be pretty nice.

Morning and afternoon Meetups (Cofee and Beers):
Bike and Bean (in the VOC) http://www.bikenbean.blogspot.com/
This will be our headquarters for the time we are there

Bike Shops:

Bike and Bean, Absolute Bikes http://www.absolutebikes.net/sedona/sed_frset.html

Breweries:
http://www.oakcreekbrew.com/oakcreek/home.php

I'll try to set up a led ride by the Bike and Bean crew on the Friday or Saturday morning. I've only ridden there once, but it was epic. Anyone who is very familiar with the area can lead on the other days.

Post up if yer in!

I have also considered renting a house if people want to chip in, but I wasn't sure what the demand would be since there are so many more hotels in that small area.

I've been wanting to hit up anyplace in AZ for some time now. I'll have to see what the overall costs may be on this. Can't commit to anything now though.

I'm almost certain I'm in. Depending on the carpool situation, I may have to bring both bikes.

I stayed at the Red Agave before, recommended, and the Bike n Bean is a cool shop with maps, tours, coffee and cool people. Hmmmmm.
Sedona golf resort is a mile away and is connected to quit a few timeshares, like $250. for a weeks stay in a suite, most sleep 4-6 and usually has a kitchen.

Very interested. I had my first taste during Thanksgiving last year. Keep us in the loop. There are camping options too.

+1 on Red Agave! Great place and they have a fire pit to hang out at night and grills to cook on. Not to mention that the trails go right to your back door. I could literally spit on the trail from my back porch (or pee).

Sedona is an amazing place that is family friendly. I will have to put some feelers out with my brood.

***UPDATE***

Got an email the other day from the Bike and Bean Crew. They are happy to led us around the rocks Friday as well as possible Saturday. Here's the upside down email trail (Below)... These guys are really cool.

As soon I get the house together I'll be making reservations for my fam. Most likely at the Laquinta, 'cause they like dogs and it's pretty easy to get to the trails from their lot. Let me know if anyone else plans on staying there and I'll see if we can get a group rate.

:bang:

What's up John,

Yeah man no worries! Friday we have our shop ride so that would be no problem. If you want Saturday just give us a reminder call the week before and we'll make something happen.

Look forward to seeing you guys.

Jim
--------------------------------------------------------------

Hey guys,
I'm setting up a group mountain bike trip from San Diego to come out to Sedona the 14-16th of October. We plan on using the shop as our meetup and general hub for the 3 days (for coffee, beers, and broken stuff). Do you think there would be any chance of having any of you lead us on some cool local trails that may be off the map on either Friday or Saturday? There will be varied abilities but most of us ride together a lot and can get through anything.

Let me know if you can help out.

Bring your XC legs. I don't remember a whole lot of downhill, but the XC trails are super flowy with some nice technical stuff mixed in.
