The North Umpqua River Trail, referred to locally as The Nut, is a 79 mile trail that closely follows the North Umpqua River drainage. As a part of our Cog Wild tour we were to ride most of the trail over the course of three days. Day 1 started on "cog time" as our shuttle vehicle rolled into the hotel parking lot fashionably late. We loaded up our bikes, camping gear and riding stuff and got on the road.

The North Umpqua is about a 2 hour drive from Bend. Our destination was the Toketee Lake campground. Upon arrival we unloaded, set up camp and prepared to ride.

Our ride for the day was to cover the Dear Leap and Jessie Wright segments for a total of 15 miles. We found out who was a strong rider and was weak right out of the Toketee Lake Trailhead as the we were greated we a 30 minute climb to start.

A local fire had trapped the afternoon sun behind a cloud of smoke leaving beautifully filtered orange sunlight poking through the trees.

The terrain consisted of short steep climbs out of side drainages and then fast descents leading to another steep climb.

The Dear Leap segment was a demanding and enjoyable piece of wonderful singletrack. Unfortunately, the buzz was killed when we found out the Jessie Wright segment was closed due to construction at a dam which it passes near by. We coasted down the road, met up with our shuttle and headed back to camp. All was not lost however, as we were greated by a cooler full of Deschutes brew and steak and potatoes was on the menu. We would ride plenty more of The Nut over the next two days.

Road trip...no kidding!

Thanks for the pics Matt

Would you recommend a tour or is this something we could pull off on our own easy enough?

We had people flying from all over and were not familiar with the area, so a tour was the best and easiest. Bend is a 14 hour drive, so a road trip is not out of the question. There are plenty of campgrounds in the area. If I went back I would road trip, maybe stop in Downieville on the way to break up the drive and take a full week. Similar to your trips to Moab, but head North to the trees. You would want to have a shuttle vehicle for North Umpqua. Wait until you see the report from the MacKenzie River Trail, even better. So much good riding up there we didn't even touch. Start planning now for after the winter thaw, They say May and June is best.
