I am thinking about riding near Bend. Looks like a lot of trails. I don’t have free time until July any thoughts? Weather trails

Any thoughts? Hell yea, I got me some thoughts. I think you're riding too much in too many very cool places that is driving me crazy  :hello:

Bend is filled with great riding. Lots of good stuff along the way too!

I never thought Bend looked very interesting. I'm sure the trails are fun but nothing unique or interesting about them. Weather should be good, might be getting hot even. Shouldn't be any issues with snow by then.

Lots of fun riding in OR. Stuff I've ridden that I liked was Ashland Super D course (5,000ft descent in 12mi on buff trails), North Umpqua Trail - 70 miles divided into segments. Look in Oregon section here for trip reports. Oakridge - lots of fun trails and variety. Alpine trail is the well known one. Mackenzie River Trail. Hood River. On the way up go up the Norcal Coast. You would love Mendocino trails. Good stuff also at Paradise Royale and Prairie Creek Redwood State Park. Have fun!

I'm more or less with evdog on my thought about Bend. I've been up there (3) times over the years and it's turned into an over-crowded, over priced, trendy, hipster town. They put in a bunch of round-abouts to alleviate traffic and it made things worse because nobody knows how to drive in them. The town itself is Mecca if you're a foodie who likes to pay triple the value of your food because it's "organic" or are into the brewery scene. The river running thru town is very cool though if you want to float or SUP on your off day.

The riding doesn't suck but it gets old fast because so much of it is similar in style and riding level. The dirt up there also turns to moon dust as the season wear on. If I was going to ride in Bend, I would shuttle up to Mt Bachelor with Cowild. I much prefer Oakridge, some trails in the McKenzie River area (Olallie and O'Leary) and the North Umpqua mentioned by evdog. I'm hitting Ashland and then a day in Oakridge on the way to Whistler this July.

When I was riding Oakridge a few July's ago, folks from Bend were showing up to escape the moon-dust.

I agree with the consensus here that Bend is an okay place to ride. I don't know how it became such a staple to go to but from the riding I have done there it is not I place I would visit if having the options of Ashland, Oakridge, Black Rock etc. It lacks variety(or just haven't found it). The jump lines are fun but only for so long. To make a visit and see friends plus ride its a pretty cool spot still. There are plenty of bars for such a small town.

I am headed to Oakridge tonight will try to post a TR when I get a chance. Of all the places I have been to its pretty awesome(although I might say that about every place Ive just visited). Camping at packard creek near the water. Endless amounts of shuttable trails(though pricey, will self shuttle this year). Or if your inclined climbing and then descending.

I have ridden Alpine trail in Oakridge and loved it. Also McKenzie River Trail is a beauty. Incredible waterfalls, blue pools and buff single track. Both recommended.

Never been to Bend.

Road Oakridge and MacKenzie several years ago with a couple of friends (TR is http://dirttreaders.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=16576). Would go back to ride Oakridge. Wouldn't ride the MacKenzie RT again (from what I've heard, and above, Olallie and O'Leary are better trails in that area). MRT is beautiful and definitely different than anything local but to be honest I got bored about 2/3 of the way through. Unlike riding in the desert southwest or say Colorado, the riding we did in Oakridge/MacKenzie is in the trees nearly the entire time, so the experience was all about the trail and not about the views.

I have heard that about MRT. The 20 plus miles sounds enticing and on an elevation profile looks great but its like 2k descent over the 20 plus miles so its relatively flat. I would do it once for the experience but from others opinions it sounds like a one and done kinda thing.

MRT: Once is enough. Serene for sure, but NOT a challenging ride other than the extended saddle time. Oakridge on the other hand...... I must go back! Middle Fork trail, Alpine trail.... ALL THE TRAILS!

As a San Diego rider, it's a real treat to ride in such dense and beautiful forest.

The upper part of MRT is great. The second half is just flat-ish singletrack riding through forest. I can see why people think it is boring, but no one is putting a gun to your head and making you ride the whole trail. There are plenty of access points you could end your ride at before the trail puts you to sleep. Otherwise just enjoy your cruise through the forest.

^^^ I agree with evdog. I liked it, especially the upper part (https://dirttreaders.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=15771), and I’m sure you’d like it too, tfitz. However, if you’re up there solo and can’t arrange a shuttle, you’re better off finding something you can loop or that makes a good out & back.

Agree with all of this. I'd do MRT again but if possible would arrange a shuttle to pick me up after the Blue Pool at the Trail Bridge Reservoir area. After that, the trail is repetitive and flat.

tfitz...if you're going to be in Bend anyway, you can catch a shuttle to MRT (or many other rides) from CogWild Tours there in town.

That's good to know. I haven't really looked into MRT since friends descriptions weren't great(they also rode it in 1 inch of snow). Any riding is good riding still.

Ill be meeting a friend from SD in a few weeks in Bend so I might convince her to ride the upper part.
