[QUOTE=Mudd]The "official" word from CNLM as of 10/30/08, dispite their "signage" promising a 2009/2010 re-opening...

Sorry I didn’t reply to your initial email sooner. It is report writing season, and things have been busy. Still, no excuse for not getting to you sooner.

The section of trail that has recently been improved by Carlsbad Parks Dept. is all that is currently in the works for official usage. It follows from the se corner off Lionshead, downhill to the Vista sewer easement, following this to El Fuerte. That is all. I suspect that we’ll get this signed within the next year.

What remains of the top of the hill that is connected through Los Monos Preserve will be nuked by the developer just as soon as they get around to it. This leaves only a whole bunch of hillside. Much of this hillside is wetland. The Flightline trail and improvements bikers had made over the year prior to our accepting easement will likely never be approved for official usage.

The Preserve is home to sensitive upland and wetland habitat, three federally threatened species, and several other species that are concurrently listed as protected under the Carlsbad Habitat Management Plan. This Preserve isn’t like the property around Denk Mtn (University Commons) that we have been cooperating with you on. It is loaded with sensitive habitat. Plus, there is much erosion on the property that resulted from years of unmanageable usage. These things cannot be addressed with current resources while also managing for human traffic.

To get the approval to develop more official trails you would have to work with the City of Carlsbad, the County, and develop a plan that would address the impacts and avoidances you will undertake under the California Environmental Quality Act. I am not versed in the intricacies of environmental law, so I cannot be of much help to you here. You are welcome to join us on nature hikes and gain some more understanding of what this property is set aside to protect. I expect to lead at least two on weekends this coming spring. In the meantime, the county will not allow for public usage, except in the furtherance of maintaining the values of the Preserve.

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance to you.

MTB Bill has a old Flightline video on his page as well.

Regarding the trail, this is bad but expected news. The "hillside" is really what everyone was hoping to have reopened. Without that, I really don't even know what value it will add. Except maybe El Dood will have a short little trail to ride back and forth on during lunch

Poor quality video, but good to see familiar faces. How old that clip is anyhow?
