Ran into Rich Julien today at La Costa. He was, as usual working his ass off on the trials we all love and I was riding. I asked if I could help as i usually do, and he was a bit quiet. He told me some assh@le stole his tools he had hidden in a bush, about $100 worth. I told him someone should bake hima cake or something for all he does, and that brightened him up a little. He told me some folks threw him a party at LC once, gave him some lights and money for his work.

I'm pretty sure he's doing OK money-wise, just a guess though. Maybe the DTs should send him a present, maybe a t-shirt, or some money for tools. He'd prolly appreciate tool things more right now.

I am willing to step up and handle the whole thing. Anyone interested in helping, any gift ideas? Someone have some tools we can donate to him?

I take my machete down the canyon during trail maintenance and it comes pretty handy.

What a bummer. I know Rich is doing maintenance on Vista Del Mar, from top to bottom, ahead of a trail work day there in January. He works tirelessly for the mountain bike community...dude is at every advocacy meeting, every trailwork, working out at La Costa solo and meeting with city and county officials trying to get new trails opened. I got $25 to pitch in for the new tools, or whatever we get him. I'll talk with him tomorrow to see what he needs and what was taken.

-CHEERS  (to everyone but the a$$hole who stole Rich's tools)

Very nice offer. Sadly, the "Big Bore Blowgun" is illegal in the state of California. That's what he really needs to hunt down the guy that stole his stuff.

I'd contribute $ for this. Rich Julien is an awesome guy who does TONS of work. Do you know what kind of tools were stolen?

So just got done having beers all day with Rich at Beyond Bikes SDMBA booth......He had a steel wheel barrow, a rock bar, a shovel, a rake and a pick axe stolen. I told him we are not only willing to pay for the tolls he had, but the tolls he NEEDS! This is a guy who puts in countless hours to make sure we have trails to ride. Currently, the Vista Del Mar trail is being improved top to bottom. There is also a possibility of building more singletrack on the north side of Denk Mountain to replace the wide scar that is the existing fire road. If you have ever ridden La Costa and appreciate it for the awesome urban mountain bike destination it is, contribute some money. How about $5 for every day of the week you ride the trail? This site was built around weekly La Costa rides. I think about $250 will do the job. I promised Rich if he went out and purchased the tools to replace what was stolen, we would reimburse him. Time is of the essence, as there are people on the trail everyday improving what we ride. LDood, how can we set up a PayPal account for Rich. I have $25 to burn right now. Thanks, Kimba for bringing this to everyone's attention. What are you willing to contribute to contintue riding excellent singletrack? If you have ever riden La Costa pony up some cash now! What are you willing to contribute?

I think its a great idea to contribute to Richs hardwork. Money, tools, even time will be awesome. Anything anyone can do for Rich for the thousands of hours he has put into trailwork and advocacy throughout the county should be a priority for anyone who has ridden on any trail in the area and hasn't either donated money, time or materials to the cause.
But just a side note though, Ldood created this site not around weekly La Costa rides but for a mellow place riders can commune, network and chillax without being regulated out the wazoo. The weekly La Costa rides with good friends from this site is another plus to his creation.

I have no clue on that kind of stuff. I say we just do it the old fashioned way: somebody receives the dough buys the stuff, and we figure out a way to get it to Rich. Does he know about this site?

RHS...that was a little tongue in cheek. Obviously, this site is much more. (Thanks again, LDood). My point was that La Costa is discussed and ridden alot, including weekly group rides.

Kimba....how about this, I am going to show up at the weekly La Costa ride next Saturday AM and take up a collection and will get it to Rich. Any DT'er that wants to donate to the cause, show up to the ride or pass along some cash to someone who will be there. It will be nice to finally meet you all and get in a DT ride.
