I had planned to mtb to work today through the canyon, but figured they might be serious about the closure. Didn't want dfg to accidentally shooting a mtb'er.

Might not be accidentally!

Deer Canyon trail build is finally here. We will be in the canyon just below the lake in Deer Canyon. The area is still closed while CalTrans/SanDag is rehabilitating the canyon floor. We will be creating a new corridor above the section that continues to be eroded by the stream. This will be through some nasty growth so.we will be bringing in the mini excavator to establish the corridor. The ultimate outcome for this will be a legal loop, officially connecting tunnels to the switchback trail. This loop has been used without any guarantees in the past. For now, please respect the closure until the rehab is done. It will give the new section of trail time to settle in. After that, we have a legal loop that has been needed since the day the trails were recognized as official.

Nothing from the contractor yet. They are behind schedule, not really a surprise as they were unable to start on time due to permitting issues in the beginning.

We put the reroute in three months ago when we were allowed to get in there with our equipment. Currently it is still on stand by. I was looking it over about 1 month ago and the corridor heading out from the switchbacks is marked for fencing but it had not happened yet. They were still working on the irrigation so there were a lot of open trenches, and we all know what klutz mountain bikers are - falling into wells, canyons, and trenches so, for your safety, you cannot possibly be allowed to endanger yourself like that. :-)

I reached out to Ranger Washington before I responded but was unable to get a hold of her. As soon as I hear back from her, I will update this post.

As promised, the update:

Ranger Washington called CalTran to inquiry about the trail opening dates. She was told "hopefully the 1st of October".

There are a few caveats: Contractors are only as fast as the work they do so it could be longer, the trail is being poached and the new plantings are being crushed, and the fencing has to be in place before they open it.

They have not been working on the fencing to make it easier for the plantings but now have to go back and redo some of the problem areas delaying the fencing. I was not able to find out where it is but how hard is it to avoid a plant? Sounds like some of the delays are of our own doing.

I am hopeful it will be the beginning of October, but I am guessing mid to late in the month.

Great News for Deer Canyon! The opening of the trail is Saturday, Oct 5!

BUT because it is still CalTrans land, there is a huge problem. They have invested a lot of money in rehabing the valley floor. Tunnel 5 (closed) and Sidewinder (also closed) are still being used. Many new native plants have been crushed trying to recreate the closed line across the valley floor. CalTrans is legally obligated to rehab X acres and they have had to go back and replace quite a few plants at a large expense.

So here is the warning.....

The opening and continued opened status is contingent upon no more bullshit from the entitled users. If you see someone using Sidewinder or Tunnel Five, let them know that it is jeopardizing legal access from Switchbacks, through Deer Canyon, over to Tunnels. CalTrans has the budget to make it miserable for all users in that area. Please help spread the message.

More good news...

We are also working on paperwork to get McGonigle Canyon trail open all the way from where it climbs up the fire road to Santa Monica (Bakersfield to some), west to the intersection of Carmel Valley Road and the 56. It has to go through a bit of a process but it is moving forward. Right now there is a chain link fence just west of the fire road climb.

Wait, no, it's because the Ranch House has Corona Virus. Or, uh, they're worried we do and that the crotchety old meanies in there might catch it. Either way, no meeting.

Here’s an email forwarded last week about LPQ by EBasil of the Multi-Use Trails Coalition:

Hello,
I wanted to share our new official trail map. It includes all three Preserves, showing how Los Pen, Del Mar Mesa and Carmel Mountain are all connected. The pdf prints very legibly in black and white. We will be getting a larger version of this map posted in our kiosks as well. This map can also be found online at https://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/parks/oscp/maps
Please share this with anyone you think might be interested.
We are coming into that time of year when we will have some trail closures, we really appreciate your help spreading the word about responsible trail use, it makes a difference.
Coming soon: we will begin some needed repairs on the Trans-County Trail east of Black Mountain Rd soon. The trail will be closed during construction because it will be impassible while it’s being worked on, nights and weekends included. The work should only take two weeks or so, barring any weather delays. I will let you know the schedule when it is finalized.
In the meantime, stay safe and healthy; wear your mask and social distance.
