From Gina just now:

Happy Friday!

I’m sure you are all wondering about the status of the trails after the 3+ inches of rain and the creek swelling to over 12 feet. They are wet; very, very wet. All the crossings are flooded and the bridges are displaced. Wagon Wheel is a total loss. The trail is covered, in sections, with water that was too deep to drive through. We are working on a temporary solution for the trails north of the creek to perhaps get us back on them sooner rather than later, but we still need a few days of sun before we can get the materials on site. It is still too wet to drive on and there is a chance of more rain showers on Sunday, not helpful.

Duck Pond is overflowing its spillway, so “Lower Cobbles” (just north of the waterfall) is a flowing creek, not useable. The South Main Trail off of Black Mountain Road is completely washed away, down to the base river rock.

Del Mar Mesa Preserve

The vernal pools on the mesa are covering the trails. Therefore, per the Resource Management Plan, the trails on the mesa are temporarily closed to preserve the pools and adjacent habitat. They will remain closed until the pools have receded adequately to pass them without widening the trail into the adjacent vegetation. Even Deer Creek is flowing high, it needs a few days to dry out as well.

Carmel Mountain Preserve

The trails are still very wet. There is water seeping from the vegetated slopes across the trail, making it very slippery and rutted with tracks. There are places where the water is ponded across the trails. It is imperative that we don’t infringe onto the vegetation. The soil crust on Carmel Mountain are especially sensitive. A horse hoof creates irreparable damage to the crust and the depth to which they sink can hazardous to the horse. Bike and foot tracks do a lot of damage as well. Let’s keep off of the trails in Carmel Mountain for several more days. If we get an precipitation this weekend, it will extend the closure.

There is months’ worth of work to do on the trails and infrastructure. It is so very tempting to go “check out” the conditions; however it would be most helpful to stay out of the Preserves until you hear from the rangers that they are open. We will work as quickly as we can. We already have some volunteers ready to work on some of the crossing, once they are accessible; but we can always use more hands. Contact me if you are interested in helping in any way.

Total loss. Maybe we can get the scouts to rebuild it 5 feet higher? Not that it would have made much of a difference. Water rose to nearly 13 feet at the measuring point east of Black Mountain Road. It must have been something to see.

Wow. That is a shame. Maybe the rangers will finally listen to Rich's advice and let us build a sturdy low fixed bridge that the water can simply flow over top of when it gets high. Not sure how you build bridges in PQ that can withstand a 13 foot rise in water.

Doesn't work like that. If the bridge is in the water flow, kiss it goodbye.

Something like a swing bridge is the only thing with a chance to survive

Yes, it can work like that with the bridge in the flow, and is not uncommon. A swing bridge is to let ships pass through.

I think that current rules and regulations won't let agencies install proper posts to withstand the force of the water. If it was possible you could do it right, the first time, and not have to repair & replace them after every storm

I don't see a caisson in the middle of LPQ creek happening. Seems like the way to go would be lightweight and floating with a single cable tether. Wouldn't work for horses, but I don't think I have ever seen a horse that far west in the canyon.

May the board rest in peace... :(

Fear not. The board no longer serves the same purpose or holds the same stature of days past. It is much easier to work with Ranger Washington directly now.

. . . and it should be noted that we all voted unanimously to fill those seats.

There's little relevance in continuing to have a PQ canyon CAC. I think we all feel it.
