This was posted a couple of days ago on empty-beer and has generated some controversy, as does anything at LPQ it seems. The cards of the heavy hitters seem to be falling in the 'we should do it 'cause it's the right thing to do' camp, or it's just SDMBA bonding, dunno.

Just curious what the opinions are from the 'Dirt-T' side of the track are, and a heads up if anyone hasn't heard about it yet and wants to join in.

From original post:
4/18/2009 Trash Clean-Up at "Tunnels"
Trail News

Re-scheduled Date for the SDMBA Trash Clean up at the Penesquitos/Del Mar Mesa “Migrant Tunnels”.

The new and final date for the trash clean-up day is Saturday 4-18-2009 8:00am. There has been some recent miss-information as to the day of the event being 4-11-2009, THIS IS NOT CORRECT!!

Again April 18 2009 is the new and final day for the trash clean up. We will meet on the southern most end of “Camino Del Sur” near the HWY 56/Camino Del Sur. exit right by the Mobil gas station. Park on the surrounding streets (not in the Mobil gas station). We will be working on in up to three groups depending upon size in order to distribute our own impact to area and not concentrate our foot traffic in any one area.

We will be working like an ant colony, but with everyone divided in groups with different roles such as gathering and hauling in that will hopefully prove to be minimally invasive but also efficient with our manpower.

All participants should bring a good pair of work gloves and some sturdy shoes but we also need things like wheel burros and large trash bags I also would like to encourage any inventive ways you can think of to get trash from the trail from to an area suitable for vehicle pick-up. This will be the hardest part of our task that can only be solved by human power.

Next we still need more Trucks and/or Trailers with a way of covering the load during transport. If you are blessed with such equipment we can put it to good use for the day. Call or email mike@sdmba.com 858-792-7600

Finally we are expecting a very large amount of trash and the city is still planning on charging us to dump the trash we remove. We will be collecting donations in order to offset this expense the day of the event.

Here is what I posted, I had a reply also about my post, but holding it in for now.

HAHA, I'd rather poke needles in my eyes than show up to help clean up.

Also why didn't you show up for the vote for Erik?

The trail dates get pushed back, when are we going to find out what trails will be open to MTB. I have no problem cleaning, but it's a give and take situation for me. So far they've taken, so what are they going to give to us (MTB), as we don't know yet.

Some very entertaining responses to yer thread, J. Thanks for bringin' it over here, since I'm "retired" from emptybeer.

As for me, I'm conflicted about the whole issue. On the one hand, I'm sickened by the prospect of playin' Charlie Brown to the CAC's Lucy one more time.

On the other hand, like oatmeal, pickin' up trash "is the right thing to do". And if I DO participate, I'm giving up a day's income, which right now is kinda tough. Sat. is normally a full working day for me.

I have nothin' but respect and admiration for Mike Maio, aside from maybe his memory challenges, but I do hafta say that his sudden "assertive" approach online here does not sway me in the direction of joining in on this one. Quite the opposite, in fact.

I respect Rich like all get-out, and he's entitled to my attention. Like he says, if anyone has paid their dues in the trails dept. he has. I could never persevere like he did after so many crushing disappointments.

But my style is different, and he knows that, and he and a few of you know why i keep my ID on the down-low. (But "Marvin" was mighty close! Hehe...).

So, for now, I think I'll just hunker down, reload a few rounds, and wait to see how Eric weighs in on this event.

After all, Enquiring Minds STILL wanna know.........

Ouch! OCD on target once again.

And yes, me too, I hope I don't forget to forget to show up.

If I forget to set my alarm, that might remind me not to forget to forget to show up.

I'll be there.

If I don't forget to.......

do,,,,,,,,

something.

Sure! you can go ridding, just you can't ride there. I have done a few of these trail days at LPQ and each time I come away shaking my head in disgust. I don't think picking up trash is going to change the anti mountain bike attitude. How about this,.. lets all dress in black jerseys, black shorts, full face helmets and go ride the Mesa right in front of them, we could make up some sorta chant, like spelling H. O. R. S. E., you aint got more rights than me.
I like the Charle Brown to Lucy, football comparison, I think that fits perfect.

I'm Just Kidding (Kinda)

If anyone was to give up their day to do something "good," perhaps going to a homeless shelter or an animal shelter would be a better cause than this.

I try not to say negative things in any public forum, but this issue has pissed me off enough to want to voice my opinion. A trail day at a trail that is off limits to us is retarded. If they don't want anyone in this 'protected' area, wouldn't foot traffic be just as bad as MTB traffic? Not only that, but they want us to pick up garbage from people who lived there for decades when we were only riding there for a hand full of years? Yeah, let me waste a Saturday that I could use riding or working on some other trail, let my truck get used to haul god knows what to the dump. And I'll have to pay for the dumping fees to the very f'ing city that doesn't have the money because it is broke from holding hearings on the issue of "tunnels' just to bow down to the greedy horse owners, or worse land developers. We as MTBers could show up in the thousands and no one who counts will ever know, because the people who make the decisions (horse, developers, and city officials) don't show up for charity clean-up events because they are too busy scheming to get rid of us.
I love the Tunnels trail network just as much as the rest of you, but I feel like the only reason they want the trash picked up is so that they don't get their horses and tractors dirty.

I know that some of the things I have said may not be true, but I've seen trails get shut down due to the area being "sensitive" only to see houses go up months later and I'm very frustrated with the process that keeps kicking us to the curb after we cleaned the yard.
