The east end of Tunnel One in the Del Mar Mesa has always been slated for development. It was not part of the Del Mar Mesa preserve. There are two planned developments, Merge 56 and Rhodes Crossing

Merge 56 is the mostly commercial side of the property on the north portion of the mesa, not far from the dirt pyramid. Rhodes Crossing is the southern part of the property adjacent to the existing home above Park Village Elementary.

Grading officially started for the Rhodes Crossing development today.

Ultimately the large dirt pyramid you see on the mesa will be the fill for where Camino Del Sur will cross Deer Canyon (Tunnel One). While it has not happened yet it is only a matter of time as the city approved this plan back in the early 2000's.

The east way out of tunnel one up to the gas station and the mesa crossing over to Carmel Mountain Road will be impacted/closed as the grading pushes north. Part of the plan is to extend Camino Del Sur to the intersection of Carmel Mountain Road south of the 56. It will eventually push down to Park Village Ele.

The silver lining is the developers are on the hook to provide a bit of a loop connection over to Darkwood Canyon once the building is completed. This is the small canyon that is adjacent to Park Village Elementary and heads north up under the 56. We are pushing for a sooner than later because it does not take a rocket scientist to see it will be 3-7 years before development is complete. Also, their idea of a "trail" is steep and wide. I will fully admit there will be a few "dirt sidewalk" sections through the community on top, kind of like over by Hooterville but the canyon trails need to remain trails.

I just wanted to get ahead of this before the rumor mill got started. If you have questions, please ask here. I will be happy to answer any and all questions I can.

There hasn't been anything on that mesa other than a two connectors to tunnel one for years. Between the heavy equipment, grading, and billion wire fences, you would not find it worth any amount of effort right now.

They put up this fence near the end of T1 Tuesday March 27th right after the short rocky climb. My friend had ridden it in the morning and it wasn't there. We all came back through at 6pm and it was up. Oh well. Another one bites the dust.
