We saw three on the trail at La Costa today. Two guys were probably only in their 30's and seemed fit, yet they were on e-bikes (and flying uphill). The third was probably late 40's or early 50's and seemed fit, but who knows - could've had some sort of health issue.

I'm not one to bash the fun of others, but I have to admit, I was a little irritated with the first two guys. I can see the benefit though. If you're not too concerned about the cardio aspect, and want to bomb down more times than you could on a standard bike, it's got a certain appeal.

And even though someone could tune it up for more speed, you can only go downhill so fast. I don't feel an ebike would help get me down the hill any faster. Just more runs by helping me get up the hill more times.

That said, the shitty suffering that coincides with normal pedaling up the hills is what I want for some stupid reason. I'll pass on the ebike.

It's obvious that resistance is becoming more and more futile though.

I have seen four ebikes at LC the last 2 times I have been there now. The place is a blast, but the trails do need some love.

If you send your money to SDMBA, it stays with SDMBA. If you send your money to IMBA, for example membership, a portion of it will go to SDMBA.

^^^ Thank you for clearing that up. I was under the impression that after they joined together a portion of either fees went to the other also.
I think I joined IBMA last time round and got me some groovy socks. Next year it will only go to SDMBA

Chuck is correct. I probably should have added that there is only one membership, which goes through IMBA, not SDMBA, and then SDMBA receives a piece of the pie from that. If you make a donation to SDMBA, it stays with SDMBA and IMBA does not get a piece of it.

There are donations and there are memberships. The membership card will get discounts at places like Bike Bling and the donations doesn't. Well, it looks like I'll not be a member of either until they split and the only donation will be my time & sweat at trail work days.

Not sure if this was set up by IMBA but you can tell them what you think about e-bikes

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/82KJT6V

Donating to SDMBA projects like the Ramona/Pamo Valley project is still worthwhile and $$ will only go specifically to that project. IMBA won't see any of that.

Being a member has certain benefits like discounts BUT those dollars will go to IMBA also.
No win

About donating to IMBA or Sdmba, although you may not agree with all of the policies they endorse you do agree with the majority of what they do. When the land managers sit down in the various localities to make policies about recreational land use the only person sitting at that table representing you is someone from one of these organizations. So donate your money to an organization of your pick and become a member.

SDMBA is looking out for our interests as mountain bikers.

IMBA is not anymore, they are looking out for their corporate sponsers like Specialized and Trek who want to inundate the trails with e-bikes. IMBA's policy is now that land local managers should have the discretion on where to allow or not allow e-bikes, but they refuse to support a the idea that local land managers should have the discretion on where to allow or not allow bikes in wilderness.

My IMBA / SDMBA membership expires today. I support SDMBA but won't be renewing as I refuse to give another penny to IMBA. Will donate to trail funds and do trail work/advocacy instead.

FUCK IMBA

^^ The IMBA response caused the follow-up from SDMBA below. Susie Murphy stated on facebook yesterday that donations to SDMBA do not go to IMBA, but if you renew your membership that IMBA gets a chunk. She also stated that people who send donations "will be included on all correspondence and invited to all events". So send donations instead of membership for next year.

I'm glad SDMBA is making a stand on this.

I'm a member of SDMBA thru IMBA and have belonged or donated to many IMBA related chapters, usually for *specific* causes such as new signage, etc...over re last 15 years. I already wrote to IMBA and told them they won't get a penny more of my money in the future. I guess I should be happy that we don't live on the edge of 250K acres of "Wilderness" like the folks in Idaho who had that area snatched away with the stroke of a pen. I think I'd just keep on riding it if that was in my backyard.

I believe that Palm Canyon trail is in danger of being closed due to Wilderness declarations. This impacts us locally too.

I’ll be riding Palm Canyon next weekend. Hopefully I can beat the Wilderness designation

Can't open the thread from that link, but Palm Canyon isn't threatened by Wilderness, it is threatened by a proposed land swap between BLM and Agua Caliente tribe. If one of the less favorable to bikes scenarios is selected the tribe would get more land around Indian Potrero which would absolutely close it to bikes. The current "closure" is a bit of a joke because the trail only crosses about 50 ft into tribal land for a short distance.
