There was a trail work day last Saturday at Black Mountain, where a new connector trail was supposed to be opened.

I opted to mountain bike & spectate the Tour de California. Did any DT'ers go, and do you know if the new trail is now open?

Thanks.

I was there and it is now open.

While it technically wasn't open before, the trail was there and in use.

I'd go for it. Should connect the two halves of the mountain better.

Yeah, I rode it several times in the last 3 months over lunch, so it was open as far as I was concerned. I've used it to loop over to the east ridge and then bomb down the ridgeline heading due north. Some definite pucker factor, but the Nomad sucks it up in style.

GP, thanks for the picture. I haven't ridden there in quite a while, but that East Ridge / Up & Over trail is totally fun. It will be nice not to have to go over the peak to connect. Less fireroad, more singletrack is the way to go! So I assume the junction off Miners Loop will be obvious. I might go check it out tomorrow.

edit 3/1: Yeah, rode it, nice connector, well groomed, a new bridge across a creek gully, and a sign at the Miners loop junction saying "Nighthawk Trail". More stuff like that & Miners would be great. Now there's only two straight-up hills to go over to get to the East Ridge, instead of three...but I think the descents are worth it. My riding buddy today wasn't so sure though!

I really like Black Mountain although it does involve a fair amount of HAB. Before they graded the East Side cutover, the "outer" loop was as much of a back country feeling as you could get without leaving the city. No signs, overgrown trails, etc.. I don't ride the "new" trail much because it means you can only ride down either Miner's or the ridge to Bushwacker (a.k.a derailleur) but not both. So I just do two loops instead :bang:

I'd be glad to give a tour as well. At least before it gets too hot.
