It is that time of year again. This year we want to finish the Manzanita loop. Lots of folks have been riding parts that are unfinished so there is a good tread burned in. There are quite a few points that need refinement and the whole south end needs to be built.

Also focusing on a new community connector that will climb/descend down the eastern flank to Cuca St giving access to the network from areas right around Los Penasquitos Elementary.

Still waiting on final approvals for Black Widow (western facing scar) but as when that comes, it will also be a big point of focus.

So, hopefully you can make it on Saturday, December 3, but if not, there is plenty of work to keep us busy all winter long.

Part of what we want to work on this year. Will be a lot of work but it will be awesome when complete.

Looking North from above Los Pen Ele. School towards the East Ridge. Trail will connect with the Manzanita loop trail for access from the east side of the mountain. This is NOT the official line yet, just a representation right now. Finalized plans will happen shortly. Cuca Street is in the foreground

Enough to probably close PQ but, up on Black Mountain conditions will be very good, if not perfect on Saturday December 3. Come get your dig on!

BUMP!!

Please post here or on the meetup site if you are coming. Want to make sure we have enough beverages for everyone.

Yes, that means beer for those old enough.

It was a good day up on the east ridge. So nice to see 4 rangers so willing to help out and bust their butts for new trails. Very refreshing to all the utter BS we hear everywhere else in the county.

It was a great kickoff. We had 25 people and all four rangers from Black Mountain attend. We got a lot more done than I anticipated. Great job!

(forgive the crappy cell phone pics. I am not happy with my s5 right now)

Lots of overgrowth on the corridor cut just one year ago.

But it didn't take long to clear it out

Lots of folks out there today, Even Rich with Jackson

A few rock features to cover the terrain changes were added...

...and a lot more tread added. It is coming along sweetly.

It is not finished yet and it is very loose so please stay off it for now. We need some rain and more work to finish it off. We still have the north end to work on. Lots of folks have already been riding that part even though it is not open yet. We will be going in over the next two weekends to correct a few bad lines, improve sight, and stump those impalers all along the trail.

This side of the mountain burnt in 2007. Much of the vegetation was torched. The western facing slopes now (again) have dense vegetation while the eastern slopes have recovered much more slowly. The soil on this eastern side is very dry despite the rain earlier in the week. We need some sustained storms to be able to get a good consolidated base. Please pass the word to exercise some will power and let the trails season.

Despite the fire wiping out the vegetation, the roots survived. Most coastal sage and chapparal survives via morning dew and store a lot of moisture in the roots. Fire does not affect the roots hence the recovery. In terms of species, manzanita grows much slower than the other chapparal and so the trail is routed to avoid the manzanita as much as possible. Note the old dead burnt stuff sticking up above the new growth. Eventually that stand will reach its former glory.
