Best part? The forest service came to us and said can you help us? Uh, ok, sure, if we have to.... :D

FWIW, I and others have been pinging them over the years trying to get their attention. Always seems crazy that the Palomar RD had 0 miles of bike trail and only a few miles of hiking trail. But yes, very exciting that USFS sent a letter wanting to move forward! This could be yuge...to get an idea of scale, check out this map I put together a few years ago:

Check out the second-to-last comment in SDMBA's 2014 member survey (no, it is not my comment). I have never heard anyone say that ABDSP would consider mountain bikes anywhere other than on the 4WD trails. Singletrack would be great. Does anyone know anything about this?

^^^yeah, I think some people are working on that, but it doesn't hurt to double check with Ben Stone.

I had heard something about that too. But I wouldn't get hopes up too much. If you look at a map of Anza Borrego it is mostly state wilderness - all the darker teal areas in the map below. Not much left for MTB use. The main one I would want in Anza Borrego is a continuation of Lucky5 trail over to Pioneer Mail (and then on to Penny Pines).

^^^ Yeah, which ties in to that whole debate about bicycles in Wilderness (with capital W)...because in the last couple of decades the WSA and subsequent W designation was used to protect a lot of land (and in general I'd say permanent protection from development or extraction is a good thing) that isn't truly untrammeled wilderness, like most of these areas on the map that have old ranching and mining structures, former jeep roads, tin can dumps, and current open 4WD routes through them -- where you can drive your goddam RV in and camp. Ought to be able to find some compromise for at least some carefully selected singletrack for bikes.

Yup. I would think CA State wilderness would be a good place to start too, because it doesn't require an act of congress to make it happen. Maybe an act of god up in the Bay area, but down here for example we were able to get Cuyamaca to move back some Wilderness boundary to allow bikes on a few trails for better connectivity.

^^^ Does that mean that IMBA has stopped fighting against MTBs in wilderness? Or is that just not a factor anymore?

I admit that I stopped paying attention to IMBA a while back and have given Sustainable Trails Coalition more of my attention. They could have changed their stance while I was ignoring them.

I doubt it.

I think the bigger immediate concern with IMBA was their taking a bunch of money in the form of memberships out of San Diego and not giving us back much of anything in return.

Especially now that the whole Subaru discount program dried up and blew away... I wonder if anyone ever took advantage of that when it was a thing.

I am glad to read IMBA is not taking as much money from SDMBA as it was.

I do think SDMBA, with the momentum it has achieved shouldn't have joined back with IMBA. Yes they help with legislation and access issues on a more global scale, but I see plenty of work being done locally in other areas without the assistance of IMBA.

Take for example Evergreen mtb in Seattle that I just joined. They have some 7 different chapters and plenty of paid staff. Seems like there are 7-10 new trails in the area opened, being worked on, or planning. Or tamba in tahoe. Granted these areas pry are not as difficult than San Diego but you get my point.

Anyways, thanks everyone in SDMBA and others who volunteer to make SD a better place for mountain bikes. The reputation and progress since I first moved to San Diego has changed for the better. Next time I visit I hope T3 will be legal :) hahahaha.

We were very, very close to leave IMBA. There's a number of issues that still need to worked out: wilderness, ebikes, to mention some. IMBA is changing big time and we believe we can be part of that change staying inside rather than from outside.
SDMBA is the biggest California chapter and there was a number of other California chapters waiting for to also leave with us.
The deal we got will be a game changer not only for SDMBA but for California chapters creating a united front wIth IMBA and better confront our unique state challenges.
Is going to be fun the next few years guys ;)

Man, this thread has been dead. Of course you might say DT has been dead to SDMBA too. In any case, for anyone not paying attention but still reading this stuff (counting on fingers…), an update to the above. From what I’ve read, they are affiliated but not much involved with IMBA anymore. In fact they went on to form CAMTB with other local California groups.
