Like Joe said, most of the Calavera discussion is happening in this thread (San Diego Mountain Biking Association -> Advocacy).

Yes I've been PM'd with that info, been over to that thread and it's still fresher here.

I am new to advocacy and have zero experience and, until very recently, little to no knowledge of the DFG regulations. As Dan pointed out several SDMBA Board members, Rich, Matt and Russ have helped in the past month, and Kevin Mortensen has provided valuable information to me in preparation for my meeting with the DFG land manager next week. I clearly am not better equipped, but I could not sit by and watch the fences go up without trying to do something about it.

While you're probably not an advocacy expert in the short amount of time since you've started this, I'd say you're at least a little bit better equipped than you originally were.

So, would just like to point out to folks who are nervous or scared or feel like they have nothing to bring to the table when it comes to advocacy... just try and there are people willing to help. And if meeting with officials isn't your thing, there are certainly other areas where your personal experience and knowledge could be put to use (regardless of whether you decide to be a part of SDMBA or not).

There are proposed changes to current CDFG regulations. The commision hopes to adopt them by early February.

There are a couple of things in those proposed regulations that need to be fixed (in my opinion) and a cohesive argument and petition to the commision is needed so that the wording s get amended before the proposed regulations become rubber stamped.

There is now a private forum on the SDMBA mesage board I've had set up so that those who wish to strategize and contribute to the effort of achieving legal bicycle access into CDFG reserves (Calavera, Del Mar Mesa, TW) can communicate and form a cooperative effort.

It's been set up for a few days now and some of the people contributing to this thread are members of the CDFG forum. I've poured thru the docs, posted what I think are pertinent points, where there is wording that supports our position, where there is wording that is counter, where there is contradiction etc etc.

Meanwhile I'm the point man for the trail repairs SDMBA Progressive Rider's Org is doing in Balboa Park on the 21st. Amongst those reparis is constuction of a 38 foot long bridge, that I've been doing the engineering for:

Image

I've got the Black Mountain CAC meeting on the 12th and the PQ CAC meeting on the 19th. 21st is the bridge build and then I leave the following day for a business trip to Europe.

Despite setting up the CDFG forum and inviting input, you can hear crickets in there. I (we and I mean the San Diego ridership) need people to step up and run with this CDFG stuff because I am spread way too thin.

PM me if you're willing to step up and contribute some brain power, or have good persuasive writing skills, etc etc.

Thanks

Rod

Sorry I can't make it. I'll be busy dumping a loaf in my local police station foyer.

As a matter of fact I figuratively dumped a loaf in their foyer today. It felt great. But if a petition might carry some weight at all with DFG, I would be glad to help circulate copies.

edit: In re-reading Rod's post, I see he said "petition to the commission" which I think means just procedural paperwork to be heard. I of course was thinking of a public petition gathering signatures to express an opinion or position. I know these carry no legal weight, but can sometimes influence bureaucrats. Might be helpful, might not be worth the trouble. Any thoughts?

Good news, finally.

I and an sdmba board member, Russ Boggs, met with the DFG land manager for Calaveras yesterday.

This is the history.

Fences
Bitching
More bitching
Some help
I set meeting

This is what we learned.

Manager will permit access on a loop on a trail basis.
We have planned to walk the parcel to determine the loop.
If he is happy after trial period, maybe more access.

As I learn more details I'll post them up.

You are bad ass. Thank you.
One person acting on his own on behalf all of us, gets more results than IMBA and SDMBA combined.
Thank You.......... again.

Walk the parcel; he or she doesn't ride I take it. After the route is mapped out be sure to send a video of what it looks like on the bike   I/we appreciate your efforts Kimba.

Great news. The fact the the DFG is willing to work with you is huge news, given all the roadblocks we have run into in PQ with the very same agency. Hopefully you can forge a relationship along the lines of what has been done at Crestridge. While any trail is better than no trail, the real test is what quality of trail you can get approved. Best of luck.

Very cool. Even when we did the Spine/Mordor work a couple of years ago and I talked to Warren he seemed pretty OK with MTBs except one area. I think he probably sees the futility of keeping people out that have used this area for recreation for decades. No doubt some trail mitigation (e.g. jumps/wall) will be required for the deal. Getting all users on board for self-regulation will be the tricky part.
