is sdmba really only comprised of 300 members or less? Or did a lot not answer the survey?

Bumping an old thread for a new development in local advocacy. SDMBA are discussing separating from IMBA, and wilderness and e-bike issues are part of the discussion. I'm posting this since there may be DirtTreaders who are interested but didn't hear about this. Yes, the DT forum has slowed, but the SDMBA forum created a few years back is pretty much dead. However, they are alive and well on Facebook (which some DT'ers won't touch) where a lively conversation is in progress.

Here is an internet link to the SDMBA article that prompted it:

My understanding of the linked letter is that: previously IMBA was getting 60% of $35 or $21. And now they want 40% of $49 or $19.6. So we're talking about an increase in membership fees of which the increase mainly goes towards local chapters with the caveat that IMBA is pro e-bike and ignoring CA. Do I understand that correctly?

One glaring omission from the linked letter is what the alternative is. Putting the e-bike issue aside, what's the cost/benefit analysis of leaving the IMBA? Granted, I don't know if SDMBA can monetize the benefit being part of the IMBA. Just some initial thoughts.

IMBA is under a lot of financial trouble. I don't have numbers but after loosing a couple of mayor sponsors(Subaru one of them) is becoming clear.
SDMBA is one of the biggest chapters(second) and even IMBA offers a lot of resources to its chapters we don't need most of them since we are already "mature" to manage our own. The one thing we truly need from IMBA is a California representative and looks like that's being eliminated.
Besides a couple of the Subaru trail crew visits in the last few years there's not much we had received back for the 60% share the gotten every year and it doesn't look like is getting any better in the near future.
IMBA is a great is a good organization with good results everywhere else but in California.

IMBA does some good stuff nationally but that is not an area of need for us here. We have a lot of issues with state agencies which they aren't helping with much. From what I've heard sdmba could go back to being an affiliate rather than chapter and get much the same benefits as the new chapter setup with much less cost.

Eliminating a CA rep sounds crazy to me. WE have 38 million people, and a number of them ride mtb's.
So eliminating the most populous(?) state, one that would be #6 in net worth if an independent nation,
is plain nuts.

We need for IMBA to understand very clearly: THEY need US.

I was definitely in favor of SDMBA joining IMBA several years ago, and I think it was a good move then, that paid off in a more professional image, and membership since then has doubled or tripled. I do not know Ben Stone, but I think his article presents some good arguments for now changing the relationship with IMBA, based on IMBA's changes. I don't know the details but the Affiliate vs. Chapter sounds good.

By the way, here are interesting results from IMBA's last survey:
https://www.imba.com/news/2016-membership-survey-results

I do think that anyone who can afford a modern mountainbike ought to be able to afford a membership in IMBA or SDMBA and it is in our best interest to contribute (money and/or time and muscles) even if we don't agree 100% with either organization's leadership. Strength in numbers.

I believe is that they are planing on eliminating all regional representatives not just California, a purely economic decision.

For $35 bucks it's a no brainer since you get 10% off a Bike Bling and other places. Support and discounts

You have to admit that good things have been happening but it had nothing to do with IMBA. Many hours of hard work from the SDMBA volunteers.

There's a lot of good things in the works too. Next Monday Advocacy meeting is going to be a busy one.

Not that I have any skin in the game but to my mind any decision of whether SDMBA does or does not stay with IMBA rests solely on the health, viability, and direction of IMBA.

If IMBA is terminally screwed up, god forbid, then don't throw good money after bad at it.

If IMBA is having a temporary brain fart and IMBA's effectiveness as an organization is tied directly to the strength of members/chapters then stand together.

The wilderness stance of IMBA puzzles me. I'd like to see an open honest accounting for why they're soft shoeing.

e-bikes: They are here to stay, get over it. Manage THAT reality rather than reacting to paranoid fantasies of what the future looks like. Braaaaaap!

CORBA weighs in:

http://corbamtb.com/news/2017/03/02/presidents-message-changes-are-coming/

I'm very disappointed in Subaru. They were a sponsor for 19 years, and their commercials still feature smiling mountain bikers. I went to one of their trail clinics and really enjoyed it, and I sure liked my old 4WD wagon that I occasionally thrashed off road in the eighties. I can't find a press release explaining their decision, although there's one extolling record profits. Here's who they currently sponsor:
