Good news, finally.

I and an sdmba board member, Russ Boggs, met with the DFG land manager for Calaveras yesterday.

This is the history.

Fences
Bitching
More bitching
Some help
I set meeting

This is what we learned.

Manager will permit access on a loop on a trail basis.
We have planned to walk the parcel to determine the loop.
If he is happy after trial period, maybe more access.

As I learn more details I'll post them up.

fantastic news kimba!

here's an idea you can move on or dump. just to keep the ball rolling. perhaps add a little momentum.

prior to a walk through how about an after work hours public meeting, with the land manager and possibly a regional politico in attendance. have a slide or large arial map of all the trails and discuss potential routes.

serves several purposes:
1) a principal point is showing the land manager the overwhelming interest of the public in this going legit, and the knowledge people have of the trails, enviro concerns (ok, make 'em up if need be), etc. and that we're not all in junior high school (not that that is a bad thing).
2) pick best routes/loops on a consensus basis (stops the haters from saying, 'hey, what about my favorite route? i'm gonna ride it anyway')
3) can emphasize that legal use deters illegal abuse. eyes and ears on the ground will deter potential damage, and with mtb's covering a large range quickly can also spot if other people are in trouble (snake bite or whatever). legitimizing the trails will promote calls to the rangers.
4) trail maintenance. can schedule trail work with large group in attendance. shows the land manager that you will clean your room. and hopefully your room has some nicely placed berms.
5) if he doesn't consider many/enough trails people will poach and this can all go south in a hurry. a large attendance will hopefully add some leverage in the number of trails he's willing to consider. in fact, it may add motive to consider most, and eventually all, trails not within the 'one area' socal_jack mentioned.

just a thought

and kudos

I just read the last 2-3 pages of this thread. Do I understand correctly that DFG plans on taking some form of action in February?

Regarding the temporary access to "a loop". Can you clarify that at all? As most of us at Calavera know, the place isn't really conducive (sp?) to "a loop" as the trails run kind of all over the place...which I know is something the DFG probably has an issue with.

Nonetheless, I appreciate your efforts to "do something". I know I personally would be willing to pitch in $$ to pay for signage/lumber, etc...once they figure out what the final plan is going to be.

Since the efforts of last February, there has been no action by DFG. Erik Trogden, the SDMBA rep I walked the parcel with, since has told me that SDMBA is not behind the proposed, legal loop that was discussed, nor did he indicate they are going to try to advocate for something, anything out there.

So, things are back to the status quo.

Really? Gosh, I wonder who has been doing all of the trailwork out there? The trails look to be in the best condition I've ever seen. Must be another group out there besides SDMBA.

Long live Calaveras.

Ok, status quo is good enough for me. Just as long as the fencing doesn't go back up, I'm happy with that.

I heard they had trail machine but never saw it. We worked out near BLT a couple of months ago with the FS and they had the most bad a$$ weed wacker I ever saw. That thing can go right through small trees :bang: Gotta get me one of them to open up old migration trails :ninja:

It's in for repairs. Had a bit of trouble working with bigger limbs.

Any chance someone could post a recap for those of us who couldn't make it?

SDMBA is only as powerful as it's member. As representatives to the mountain bike community there are certain lines SDMBA should not cross.

That's where we come in. Plans are in the works for a Meet-up of all user groups to put pressure on the City, and prevent anymore closures until new trails are in place. Locations and dates in December will be coming soon. We will need everyone's support in getting this information out once the dates and location are released. Start rallying up your groups now.
