Rod Simmons has been working a long time on this and all of the persitance has paid off. Approvals from the city council dry and done. We have a green light for new trails. There are a few procedural things to overcome including nesting season for some birds but the connector from the ball fields, up under Carmel Valley Road, up to the Miner's Ridge parking lot will take top priority. When we get closer to the build day, who wants to get dirty?

Black Mountain Trails Plan Approved!

Fantastic!! Great job Matt, Rod and everyone involved to get it to this stage. Count me in when the time comes to do some legit dirt engineering on them hills.

BTW, I guess the "nesting" issues don't mean crap when you're completely destroying the hills to build houses...

This is good. It came just as I was beginning to believe that Carmel valley was the worst place to live for local trail access.

Thanks but this was all Rod Simmons working with Ranger Ed, enduring the bureaucracy, and taking lots of his personal time to make sure it was properly represented to the city. I will happily take some credit for hammering out the trail construction once we get to that point but I will give Rod full credit for the trails plan.

I will post up all work schedules once we get to a point that it is officially on the calendar. Some of it will be surveying so it won't take a lot of help. Once the path is laid out, there will be a significant brushing, benching, and rock armoring needed to make this successful. It will not be a one weekend job. The bigger positive representation we get out there, the more powerful we are perceived, the better chances we have a impact on future decision making in other areas.

Yes, everybody, that glass is half full in my world.

Here is the map. Not perfect but it gives a good idea of the plans.

I only do it for the abuse  .

I worked the SPY Belgian Waffle Ride last weekend. 135 miles, 30 of it dirt, 11,000 feet of climbing. marked course on Saturday, rode Moto1 at the head of the "ride" Sunday.

SPY had lots and lots of these signs up in the sections where ridrs had to question why they were still pedalling.

The same holds true for working the process in this county to get new trails. There is no instant gratification (Moto 1 - twist the right wrist and blow by the CHP escorts at twice the speed limits). You have to pedal every stroke.

We're only halfway there. Let's not pat ourselves on the back until we've built all of these trails and reworked the saved social trails into high quality stuff (think Black Widow trail).

Meanwhile, why not buy a cool jersey, put money in the hands of San Dieguito River Park that support holding Cycling events, in the hands of The Escondido Creek Conservacy, Valley Center etc?

Now that's enduro!

Not to add a downer to the process but..

I was out early this morning and saw some new fences torn out of the ground and left behind. This is the unofficial connector at the intersection of Doug hill and Lusardi had been fenced off. The trail was a short cut between two sections of the Lusardi trail to avoid a fire road climb where it drops down to the bridge and back up. While we all have used it at some point, it was never part of the trails plan.

I doubt it was one of us and I am sure I am preaching to the choir but whether you agree or not, this is not the way to handle it. There are regular Black Mountain Open Space meetings where you can come and voice your concerns.

If you know who or have an idea, please ask them to stop.

Matt, I saw that torn down fence on my Monday night ride, so it's been there at least a couple of days now. Looked like it was simply pulled out and dropped on the ground. Strange, but similar to the same kind of fence at the top of Black Mtn. that someone has been deconstructing piece by piece over the last year or so.

I wouldn't assume it was a biker since I have seen kids tearing on the fences up there many times. Last time I went over to ask them to stop and their "parent" gave me a bunch of crap for telling them to stop. After a couple of choice parenting tips from me to her they left
