The City of Carlsbad is seeking input from people who live, work and play in the city about how they use the city’s roads and off-road TRAILS. A public workshop will be held Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the City of Carlsbad’s Faraday Center, 1635 Faraday Ave., Carlsbad, 92008.

Please make time to ask for more and better trails!!

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be there and will put together a powerpoint presentation to present.

Some initial ideas to convey and request for data:

I honestly think the City has done a decent job of acknowledging/accomodating road bikers (e.g. bike lanes, a lot of lighted intersections recognize a lone bike...)

The difference between DG sidewalks and singletrack (i.e. trails people really enjoy).

Any info on actual trail use by user group?

Trail Day Volunteer numbers by user group?

Does anyone who attended the Trail Day at La Costa, this past Sat, have pics of all the volunteers?

J.A.M.,

Does this meeting encompass the Parks and Rec Master Plan, i.e. should we bring up the idea of a bike park or does that not fall under what the city is considering here?

I'll ask around for pictures of the La Costa Trail day.

The Parks and Rec. update is signed and done. They did not want to talk about trails in that process. They will probably not want to talk about parks in this one. I'll be asking for:

Real trails, not DG sidewalks
Opening Flight line (it will not be like it was) with a connection to Calvera - this is a possibility
Trails in Veterans Park with connector to Calvera
Trails along the edge of preserve areas
Connector trails in general
then a bike park
ect...

Spoke with (CNLM) Marcus recently and he told me that he didn't want to re-open Flightline. We need to convince him otherwise.

Rich and I, among many "old timers", feel that there's plenty of trail left to re-open. There's a lot of people, who work in the area, including the fire station occupants, who would benefit using the area. Yes, it would not be like it was. The proposed stream crossings would be similar to the Copper Creek bridges.

It would be nice to be able to be back on the Flightline trails. I miss them.

^^^ Yes to the idea of making Veterans Park on Faraday mtb-friendly. I drive past the site at least twice a day on weekdays and cannot imagine any other real recreational use for those hilly acres other than riding trails, but then again I am quite biased. Anybody who knows the area and rides I think would agree.

Also, the remnants of Flightline never fail to draw my attention when I drive through that valley. "Oh there's the big rock where the trail used to head into the creek with the skinny bridges. I think I can still see part of the trail that goes down from the skatepark/police center." I always thought it was real ballsy for the uh trail builder to start that trail right under the nose of the cops! :hello:

One of the problems with opening flight line may be management. CPLM has only one ranger -- Todd and he goes to several areas they manage, including Calavera and he doesn't make it to Calavera every day. I will ask him next time I see him what the deal is and if that has anything to do with it. T

Please don't accept his story about "not enough land out there".
The MTB community can manage the area quite well.

Flightline was a gem. It would be great if just a portion of that gem were allowed to shine again.
Hey. That kinda rhymes.

Meeting is tonight.

Could there be a trail from the end of Marron Rd to Calvera?

Could there be trails in the open spaces near Alga Norte?

Here is a survey where you can pin on a map where you would like mtb trails. Takes about 5 minutes.

"Flightline area
Description The flight line network of trails was widely regarded as one of the best trail systems in the country, let alone the county or Carlsbad. This area should be reopened to relieve pressure to the Calavera & La Costa trail network. The cycling community is more than willing to develop, maintain & oversee the trail network, only needing the permission to do so."

"Open Flight Line
Description The city needs to reopen one of the premier Mountain bike locations again. The need for open space is greater than ever and this is already developed and just needs to be reopened and run like a La Costa Habitat type of recreation area. It can be done"

"Flightline trail network
Description These trails have been temporarly closed but never reopened. It used to be a well known trail California enjoyed by many resident. It would need to be reopen to moutain bikers, runners, hikers and connected to Lake Calavera. With an access next the FireStation/Skatepark. it would be a great place to enjoy the open space."

Yep. Agreed!

PLEASE take the survey! In the "comments section" insist that the Flightline Trail Network should be re-opened. The MTB community will enthusiastically develop, maintain, and police the area.
