yet...

Our next opportunity to move the bike park project forward:

City Council meeting, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m., in Council Chamber, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive

The Parks needs assessment recommendation is an agenda item. The Parks department will be asking the City Council for their FINAL approval of their plan.

We wil be asking them to work with us to open a bike park next year.

Carlsbad Patch Article:
http://carlsbad.patch.com/groups/sports ... -bike-park

At the end of this process we will have a bike park approved or we will know we did everything we could...

We are 3 hours away from taking another swing at the big tree.

The Parks item is #11 of 12 on the agenda. You will not miss anything if you are a bit late.

The plan approved by the P&R committee earlier this month was presented to the City Council by Neelay Bhatt from Pros Consulting (PC) and Chris Hazeltine (Director of Carlsbad P&R Dept). Ultimately the plan was approved with no action taken to add a bike park as an independent goal. The plan had been ammended to specifically provide for the conversion of two tennis courts to eight pickleball courts. Read on for more details.

Councilman Blackburn and Mayor Pro Tem Packard asked why the desires of very vocal groups such as pickballers and advocates for a bike park were listed so low on the plans list of considerations for future P&R development. Mr. Bhatt explained that these groups, though passionate, are really a minority of the community and as such more traditional P&R offerings were deemed more important.

He continued to say that the omission of a bike park as a stand alone project in the proposal (independent of the adventure park proposed) does not preclude the city from pursuing the development of a bike park as a goal in the future. Hazeltine commented that a bike park could also be considered as part of the work to be done to 'finish' the offerings at existing parks that are as yet classified as 'unfinished'.

During the public comment period Councilwoman Wood asked for examples of a bike park and it was clear that the Council does not understand what is being asked for. Speakers gave verbal descriptions and named the Calabasas Bike Park in San Jose, CA the Collonade in Seatle, WA and Valmont in Boulder, CO as examples. The Council seemed to be interested in learning more.

Of note, but not really in the direct purview of the P&R plan, Diane Nygaard of Preserve Calavera gave a nice presentation on the public's desire to to recreate in what little open space still exists. She urged the Council to support such activities in light of the recent CDF&W related events at MTRP and elsewhere in the county.

Edit: corrected the title of Mayor Pro Tem Packard.
