I have a co-worker who I just got into mountain biking and he just happens to be a part of the La Jolla Indian tribe (east of Pala on Hwy 76). He was asking me what I thought about a trail system out on land owned by the tribe. I told him that if it was designed properly, not only would it we welcomed but I imagine the SDMBA (among others) would be willing to help design and build some trails.

This is just *his* idea at this point but they are apparently thinking about upgrading their campground out there and are looking for ideas to incorparate into the design. I guess "nature trails" was brought up so being new to the sport, he immediately thought about including bike trails.

Safe to assume everybody thinks this would be a good idea?

I often thought that Viejas Mtn., the east side, could hold a really fine contour trail that could continue north towards Devil's Punchbowl, then back above Viejas Grade.

I think they don't want too many people on the summit, but the sides of the mountain look really good for terrain contouring trails.
Pala would be a bit further, but they could draw in a number of N. county, OC, and Riverside county riders.
Plus, they still got that 916 yard rifle range!

He is going to bring it up at their next meeting. If all goes well, I'll hook him up with some contacts for SDMBA and IMBA to see what they can get started.

I used to ride at the Amago MX track but never knew about the campground or tubing down a creek.

Great memories.
I used to camp there back in the day, 'till it got too crazy and they implemented the "no dogs rule".

Also experienced my first "flash flood" experience there.

My band played the "Baja Bash" music festivals that were there in 2002 and 2003. I brought my bike with me to get around since it is pretty hilly and the campground is large. There is a creek that you can tube down when they decide to open up the dam or whatever it is that keeps Lake Henshaw from spilling out down the creek. I heard later that there was a large pot grow bust out there. Damn hippies must have left seeds there or something.

Yeah, sometimes those hippies forget MJ seeds in their camelbacks and they spill them out in the trails while they ride.... :)
