It aint no joke up there. COTA is about the standard for how an advocacy group should operate.

Going to Prescott, AZ tomorrow and they are all pro-biker there. Sedona has gone through some drama in the last 6 months over "user built trails" but for the most part it's working for them too.

Thanks for posting this up. That the old sterotype of mountainbiker's being scum is finally starting to change. I may have fit that description from time to time in the past, but now as a grown adult, I have disposable income and people actually want me to come to their town!

That feels like progress after years of being derided, cussed at, and generally treated like a second class citizen out on the trails.

yes, the numbers in that article are astounding. in fact, i may be too poor and too old to be a mtn biker after all. i may have to take up skateboarding.

the other outstanding statistic is the amount of money mtn bike events produce for the local economy. unbelievable. we have a rather unique advantage due to our climate to have the best mtn biking when all the other bike parks revert back to skiing. a nice niche our gov't officials are not taking advantage of.

but as you mentioned, if the stereotype of a mtn biker is a young, low if any income, dirtbag with no regard for community or environment, the public organizations will not be responsive. this new data is a paradigm shift in that perspective.

perhaps sdmba and whatever other organizations we might have should stratify their membership by age and income just to provide info to the public organizations they need to deal with, and importantly the politicians that rule them, to dismantle that stereotype.

Just came back from Bend and of course, they are very biker friendly. More importantly, the place has the best dirt on the planet. I highly recommend the Cog Wild tour company if you go up there.

Gosh! what a concept... An organization that worked with the all of the mountain bikers in the area, listened to their issues and concerns with an open mind, celebrated their accomplishments with the entire mountain bike community, and not just a few taking credit for any minimal success. That would be awesome, we could call them something like the S.D. Mountain bike Association. They could have meetings and tell each other how cool they are. They could have trail days and fix the trails by widening them to county standards. They could have membership campaigns and sponsor rides that only members are invited to go on, but they'll accept a new members money but then won't allow the new members to ride with them. Imagine how great it would be to have an organization like that which represented Mt. bikers, and Mt. biking in San Diego.
