well, at least it doesn't say 'trespassers will be shot'.

The "live fire" signs have been on "north Oak" in one form or another for years. If people had used common sense a while back, maybe we wouldn't find ourselves where we are now. Thanks to Chuck for doing some reconnaissance today -- the placement of the signs seems to support what I'd love to be true. The Marines seem to be offering a gentleman's agreement; let's try to accept it and see where things go from there.

I rode out there today and Oak Canyon south of Grassy Knoll was all clear. As I was descending Grassy Knoll, I came upon another rider heading in the opposite direction. When I told him about the new sign and suggested that the Marines might be proposing a compromise, he said he'd been riding those trails for 20 years and would continue to ride all of them until he was thrown in jail. I smiled, sighed, and said that just might happen.

Darwin candidate. Of course the sad part is it could just ruin it for the rest of us.

Or he'll get a hefty ticket and have to sell his bike to cover a small chunk of it.

Yeah, I was out there this afternoon too. Passed a rider at the top of 3B by the new sign, and as we parted ways he rode right past the sign headed north up the fireroad, right up on the ridgeline for all to see. I headed up to the lone eucalyptus, then turned and watched him ride the ridgeline all the way to the top of Spring (where he could probably look directly down on the firing range).

Sigh...

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Do you recall what kind of bike he was riding/what he was wearing? I'd feel a little bit better knowing there was only one "genius" out there yesterday.

Sorry, my powers of recollection are weak. He was on a 2-wheeled mountain bike, I believe. I do recall he was rockin' earbuds - useful for blocking out the sound of gunfire while riding near the range...

Would it help to put up small signs asking trail users to stay on the right side?

Warning signs about trespassing and getting arrested are mire guidelines to the chosen few and don't apply to all users

Sadly, probably not. We tried that once with small signs asking people not to ride sections of trail when they were horribly muddy and the signs lasted just a couple of weeks before they were broken and thrown into the bushes. People who "get it" are going to stay out; people who don't are going to do whatever the hell they want.

But the people who don't get it ruin it for the ones who do. If we end up losing the 3b loop for good, it's because of these morons. Really is a shame... Doing that circle was one of my favorites when I lived in east county.

I was also out there yesterday morning - rode up Oak from 52, up GN, down 3B, up Teote, down Toad's. I too get the feeling we're going to be ok riding the out of bounds parts if boneheads don't screw it up.

Still wish we could ride the other fun stuff too but I'll take this over nothing. Loop it all twice in different directions and you can get a good ride in.
