*Observation of the day:

Not too many people searching for the MENSA website end up here by mistake.

Thanks for the reach around guys. The earth moved for me too.

Random question of the day:

why does Poway seem different than everywhere else?

We just added the hodges to old coach trail connector and new staging area on highland valley rd, we somewhat recently added the highland valley rd singletrack, we are adding right this very minute some doubletrack that parallels sycamore canyon road, along with the beeler canyon trail. We recently bought acres and acres of land to add on to the N side of sycamore with the supervisor saying it was important because of the "world class mt biking" possibilities it allowed. I can ride literally everywhere in Poway on probably like 100 miles of dirt neighborhood trails, and bikes are welcome everywhere with the exception of Blue Sky Preserve. Heck even the infamous TW's has been allowed to stay in existence "kinda sort of" officially

Is there anything special about Poway that allows this?

Is there anything that can be learned or copied from the way Poway does business - 'cuz AFAIK we didn't have to really beg or fight for these trails (well I recall MTB locos may have had a LOT to do with TW not getting completely shut down), but someone out there (did SDMBA have any involvement?) just seemed to think it was a good idea and got it done.

It all comes down to the people you deal with. The smaller the city the easier it is to cut thru the red tape and bureaucracy. You can run into some cities that hate your guts and others that "get it".

The guys on the ground that manage open space (regardless of what city or agency) they all "get it". Most have a lot of latitude to how they manage their stuff. If the bosses make an edict however that latitude goes out the window.

What people don't see is that SDMBA (& IMBA) work to change the regulations and policies high up that ladder. What we want is a situation where the bosses are edicting to land managers they must allow bikes rather than having them pull out a regulation forcing the land managers to deny access.

I don't expect the average rider to relate to that or how long it takes to influence opinion and make a change in policy. We all want instant gratification to ride any trail we want. I understand that and the frustrations felt when you're denied. As such I don't lose any sleep when people blast SDMBA because they are out of the loop and frustrated. Good! It shows you care. None of us are in this for personal glory hunting. If the rider base stays pissed off it shows that the fight is never over and for as long as we are physically and mentally capable we'll keep nipping at the heels of the agencies until the next generation takes over.

Guilty as charged.

but I was a dirttreader before I became a SDMBA member let alone a SDMBA board member and one cannot escape his roots. There's a limit to how long I can stay politically correct before I have to let the real me out.

I know a lot of people on both boards. They know me.
Most on SDMBA were DT. I don't consider most as DT
any more. I don't know where it went wrong or who
is wrong or right. I know I'm a DIRTTREADER............
I tried to stay out of this, but I can't. Like I said, I know
a lot of you and can't believe the way you hide behind a
keyboard...........................

i am so loving this thread

ranging from pile-ons and full nelsons, from facts to people speaking out their butts, here is my view from the latter-

not all trails are the same, and none seem simple here in bike trail phobic san diego. seems there are some things that are doable, even with the long, brick wall politics of san diego (i'm diggin 24v's solution for exposure), to those that are not doable, like multi owned parcel legal nightmares.

so just ride it

until we can get past our own dark comedy, we will continue our path

at least it's an entertaining one

If you don't like the job that SDMBA is doing and don't want to be a part of it, you should form your own group or work on your own to improve things. I'm not saying that to be a smart-ass, I'm saying that as someone who recognizes there's a lot of work to be done and a lot of different ways to do it.

True. I see all the SDMBA haters on this site bitch and moan about nothing getting accomplished but what are they doing besides posting pictures with words.
What a bunch of hypocritical bitches.
Go to a city council meeting. Go to a trail work event. Contact a ranger to find out what can be done. Turn off your computer and turn on your brain.

did you join this board just to vent? didnt take long lol
