Makes me yearn for the days of breaking chains following you and Singleminded up hills, only to finish in my big chain ring with no deraiileur.

Anyway, hit the nail on the head brother. I feel violated.............................

Regulatory Agencies, the City and County of San Diego had determined that Tunnel 5 in Del Mar Mesa Preserve, the 4th east/west trail south of the pond, would be closed permanently. Due to recent illegal activity it was decided to CLOSE TUNNEL 5 IMMEDIATELY!

Now we will never catch the lumberjacks in the act, crooks always return to the scene of the crime.

I think it's a conspiracy...

They are probably an advanced team from pardee starting to build a new offramp off the 56 for the houses that are going to be on top of the mesa.

Watch... next someone is going to build a half pipe at the eucalyptus trees and then litter the area with Mt Dew cans and slimjims wrappers. Then the horse people will say it's the mountain bikers..

I can't be positively sure but I saw a white hair dude with a light blue denim levis jacket with the fake wool lining; whacking away on Friday 12/5 around 4PM. I think it's the guy on the brown horse.

Holy Schnapp, I was on a ride with friends and we blasted through there quick, I said, oh, "doing a little trail maintenance?" to him and he grunted something and I rode past. It didn't occur to me till later that I didn't see a bike anywhere near him and just remembered all the limbs and branches everywhere. (I also rode through there the next day and really saw the damage -- holy double schnapp!!)

Shiayt, what do we do about this? Taking pictures won't bring that canopy back. They literally destroyed the uniqueness of the bottom of T5. I can't stand horse people now.

I want you to write down and get as firmly in mind what you can truthfully say about what and who you saw there. The Open Space Director says he "has no reason to believe any equestrian was involved with this. All I've seen is a man on horseback with his dogs off leash". Now, I don't think they WANT the truth, but he's asked me for it. They want us to Come Forward, so I am asking you to do exactly that. PM me for my home phone if you like, but otherwise I want you to call Ranger Washington AND to POST on the CAC's site that's listed in this thread. Let's not make it easy for this fakery that they just can't be sure who'd cut apart a perfectly good bike trail to fit a horse.

Anyone that's seen people cutting, or riding horses in that area with cutting tools, STEP UP and Voice it.

[MultiUseTrails] Closure of Deer Canyon, 12/12/09‏
From: multiusetrails@yahoogroups.com on behalf of ebasil2001 (EBasil@aol.com)
Sent: Fri 12/12/08 3:28 PM
To: MultiUseTrails@yahoogroups.com

You may already know, or this may come as a surprise, but I'm sure it's
shocking either way: today, on December 12th, Ranger Washington
installed trail closure signs on very single trail that's on or crosses
City land in and around Deer Canyon. This is at the direction of Chris
Zirkle, Deputy Director of Parks, Open Space Division-- the head honcho
at Open Space.

This morning, I received a call from Mr. Zirkle and City Trails
Coordinator Rick Thompson, and they informed me that Gina was out
installing the signs, for the purpose of closing all trails to
"recreational users". The only trails not closed are either those not
on City land or the SDGE fire road. According to Mr. Zirkle, his
division's duyt to maintain and protect the resources in the MSCP area
can only be served by a full and complete trail closure. Zirkle claims
this action is "not punitive" but that if trail users don't abide by the
edict, that this will show that the whole area should be closed forever.

The discussions went much further, although I unfortunately had very
limited time. I pleaded with Rick and Chris not to do this, and asked
them why they would declare war on the very people that both informed
them of the vandalism on Tunnel 5 and that are volunteering to help them
patrol and preserve the area. "Why make 100 enemies when you could
reach out and make 1000 allies?" I asked. I offered, if they would
forego the closure, to assemble a trail patrol with BSA insurance (we'll
form an Explorer Troop) and have it in place by Monday. I asked how
they intend to ever enforce such a ban, and suggested that their only
answer must be "people on the ground". I offered that, whoever would be
on the ground to enforce closures could be on the ground to seek/pursue
the vandals AND could be working with 50 trail stewards by next week.

Zirkle's reply is that he'd like us to form the patrol so that we can
help enforce the closures. I'm deeply frustrated, offended and
dismayed. I feel as though the broader reaction by the trails community
will be of disgust and that those of us that have worked with the City,
sought and encouraged others to work with the system, will be tarnished
and discredited for having trusted Administrators with such defective
judgement and aggresive leanings. Don't be fooled: the opponents of
Multiuse just Won a Huge Freebie. You're a criminal now, and the real
criminals aren't even on their radar: Chris Zirkle and Rick told me
they "have no reason at all to believe the vandalism was by
equestrians." IF you stay off the trails, this proves that vandalism
works. If you don't stay off the trails, this proves that you should be
banned from them. Brilliant.

I sent out the following email to local reporters today, prior to finding out about the closure.

"Imagine an area as unique and beautiful as Torrey Pines State Park being closed to the public. The Del Mar Mesa Preserve is facing this dilemma. Grab your hiking boots, camera, and a reporter and join us for a tour of the preserve. Myself and other members of the community will give you a tour and discuss the problems impacting the area. We need to raise awareness prior to the January 15th meeting, when a board will decide the fate of the preserve. Below are some links with further information on the topic. Please, help us to obtain a fair outcome for the preserve. I would be happy to meet at the preserve at your soonest convenience and discuss the problems.

Thank you!

"

I sent it to about 40 news reporters (Ch 5, 7, 8, 10). I did receive an email back from one so far that showed some interest. I would recommend writting something and sending it to them as well. If we can get this on the news that could really help our stand.

Just one thing... I thought the closure meant no recreational traffic. Wouldn't that mean no hiking through the area as well?

I am just thinking that might be a good way sweep this under the rug until after January 15th.

'Tunnels... what tunnels... see look at this map, there were no trails over there and I don't know what those crazy mountian bikers are talking about...that area is closed for habitat restoration.'
