Here's another gem of a email I received this morning about a upcoming
"Vernal Pool Habitat Conservation Plan Work Shop".

Here ya go:

Good afternoon,

On behalf of the City of San Diego’s Multiple Species Conservation Program (Development Services Department), it is my pleasure to announce an upcoming community workshop on the development of the City of San Diego Vernal Pool Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP). The workshop will take place on March 15, 2012 at the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center from 5:30-7:30. Please see the attached notice for more details.
We look forward to your participation.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Mason
SANDAG Service Bureau (consultant to the City for the HCP)
cma@sandag.org
619.699.1951

Important note from Marvin Gerst:

The vernal pool issue is important to the Preserve and surrounding Resource Management open space areas.
The more attendees at these meetings/workshops the better.
However, this meeting overlaps the regular CAC meeting. Board members should attend the CAC meeting
and ask their alternate to attend the workshop, if this is of interest to you.

Now I am sitting here thinking, are they planning to make a side trail to bypass the "vernal pools" and keep access to the Mesa for all to enjoy or are they moving forward trying to close it down to all for good?? Hmmm.... Remember that last acticle about getting Sandag moving on this? They have now, or still.

At 9AM there was a ranger truck up in the Mesa. I surely hope they didn't drive through any vernal pools

Rode today and ran into Ranger Lisa. She put up a sign pointing out a vernal pool (near Rocking Horse) and she took the time to talk to all the riders about vernal pools. I think it is important to respect the pools and not ride through them. She was totally cool with riders riding the trails all she wanted was encourage to spread the word to ride arount the pools. Common sense really, however sometimes it is hard to know what is a just a puddle of dirt and what is an actual vernal pool.

That's the way it should be. Very cool deal.
Now if the enviros and elite thought the same way we could all get along

This vernal pool is really a non issue if we could just be allowed to go around them and not have to even get near them.

I took a leak out there Saturday. I wonder if there's a sign at that spot now...

agreed.

if an acceptable trails plan were to be established there would likely be over a hundred, if not hundreds of, people to help on trails days to create routing and boundaries around the vernal pools. although the area was closed to the public, sdmba came in one day to help clean up the area the best they could from decades of migrant abuse. just imagine what could and would be done if the area were open.

erik basil had a trained (medical, etc) volunteer patrol force that was ready to go. in addition, if all the sdmba trails were open it would constitute one quarter of one percent of the area of the preserve. this is an astonishingly small imprint to help save the overall preserve. for example, those people utilizing the trails will, as they've shown before, contact the rangers should anything suspicious be observed.

all of this help is free.

So after some prodding (thanks Mike) I found out the following about this meeting.

From Robo:

It's a huge issue, basically the city trying to put into official terms how they deal with vernal pool management. How trails can be addressed, etc. . Like an MSCP, only specifically for the pools.

Fish and Game has said they can't approve any trails by vernal pools until the Vernal Pool HCP is done. So it might actually improve things - though somehow I doubt that.

It is a good idea that if you can, please attend this meeting. Who knows, maybe you can be the catalyst that gets the East/West connector on the DMM complete. Just think how nice it would be to have a trail named in your honor

Dirt Mogul: Did she point out fairy shrimp in that pool? Could you see them doing what they do for their average 16 day life span?

I'm still traveling this week but should be back home to attend this meeting.

Having a trail named "fat old man" just doesn't have a ring to it

The brainwashing continues... The kids will probably be forced to take a vow to use only one square of toilet paper, too.

* Update: the meeting is in the evening so the kids will be spared.

I sure the little mush brains are full of it well before this evening of enlightenment
Hopefully there won't be any pictures of chain saw wielding MTB's. That might toss them into shock and need years of therapy
