Good news in Del Mar Mesa!!!

Yesterday, December 10, 2015, the California Coastal Commission voted to concur with the proposed trail amendments we reviewed a few weeks ago. This means the section of trails closed due to lack of approval now have that needed approval. I do not know the time line for opening them as there is still an issue of private property at the bottom of the switchback but now the city can allow access to the West Mesa Trail and the Switch Back trails. Stay tuned!!

Item #26a in the report http://www.coastal.ca.gov/mtgcurr.html

^^^ Great news, BB!
I hope the trailwork went well today....I was called in to make a house call today, so I couldn't make it.
Besides, my lumbar and r. knee are still in recovery mode from last week!

I spoke with Sr Ranger Gina Washington this morning and it is official. The West Rim trail and the Switch Back trail are now open. Those were the last two. They have taken down any remaining barriers and installed some signage to help. Problem is the bottom of the Switch Back trail ends at private land. They are still working on an easement but it has not been agreed upon as of today. It will take time. Please ride accordingly.

I know there are always a lot of questions but if there is a sign or fence (including go-arounds) it is closed. East Rim, Rattle Snake, Tunnel 3(rocking horse) and Tunnel 5 are not part of the plan. If you are riding these, please stop. They are not open and you can be ticketed.

So they open Switchback trail which is basically an out and back because of private land now?

Sounds like a recipe for success!

Wouldn't it been a smart idea to fine the equestrian back in 2008 and leave all the trails just like they were back then? We would have saved a lot of money and time working through all this BS.

Rain.....

Good Morning,
I'm sure this is no surprise...the trails are closed for a couple of days. Once it stops raining we will need to let the trails dry out again. Once they do, remember that the creek crossings are still closed. Either the bridges are washed out or the area surrounding the bridge is flooded. We noticed someone created a little detour around some flooding at PQ Creek Xing, it directed people right into a patch of poison oak. That is not good.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Hope to see on the trails soon.

Senior Ranger Gina Washington
