ok not exactly but I do believe if we dont act soon. let me explain: I have notice lots of new trails at Caleveras criss crossing over everything. Granted, they kick ass but Caleveras is not a MTB park, its a preserve. So, since I am shitty at volunteering normally, I thought I'd do my part. So, I am going print a handful of lamintaed posters out and post them on the empty bulletin boards throughout Caleveras. I'd love some feedback. the following is just the text. The poster will look professional and i was even thinking of going so far as to do a separate poster with pics and info of the animals and plants that make caleveras their home.

Attn: Mountain Bikers
Calaveras is a preserve for nature and right now, we are allowed to be here. But if we keep making new trails, we will lose permission to be here altogether. This almost happened recently at Los Penisquitos Canyon in Sorrento Valley (really). Forunately mountain bikers (San Diego Mountain Bike Association and others) agreed to close down some trails in order to be allowed to stay there. Think about it, if we keep making new trails that zig zag over open areas, the snakes, birds, rabbits and coyotes will not have a place to raise their kids, seriously. Let’s do this before they make us...because they may not even let us. So if you see that someone has piles rocks and branches over the entrance of a trailhead to close it off, please don’t remove them. Thanks.

I think there are a lot of us who are seeing this and in the back of our minds thinking that this can't end well. So kudos to you (and OldDogDan) for trying to put something into action.

I will be the first to admit that while I'm pretty good at trailwork, I have no experience in dealing with the bureaucracies of land management. Just as there are a hodge podge of new trails at Calaveras, there are just as many different organizations trying to manage it.

The only advice I can offer is to coordinate any action with SDMBA to ensure that everyone is moving in the same direction and telling the same story. There may be negative implications down the road if mountain bikers were to quick to take responsibility for creating any "new" trails, especially anything near the mitigation parcel.

Just my $.02 and I will definitely help out where I can.

Hi Danimal,
I agree with Brian, best to hold off on posting signs. Start by expressing your thoughts in a friendly way to other riders, and by contacting SDMBA. In fact, next Saturday 10/18, if you could make the Carlsbad Oaks trail work day talked about in another thread on here, you could meet and talk to people from SDMBA, land management, and City of Carlsbad. Thanks!

X-post from emptybeer, looks like someone else has found these trails and isn't real happy. Does anyone know this person?

Brian....I think I know who he is. Were you at the Carlsbad Trails Day event in the spring? He was there as a part of the hiking coalition, but is very supportive of mountain bikers. Big guy with a camo hat. He volunteers alot of time at the preserve working with schools and such. Dude, can talk your ear off though. Rich and I got stuck talking (listening) with him for a half hour as we were closing down the SDMBA booth. He is a friend of mountain bikers and made some pretty reasonable points in his rants over at mtbr today. Sounds to me like the Preserve Calavera people have found out about the recent spat of trail building and are pissed. Sh!t will hit the fan out there sooner or later and I am betting on sooner. The mountain biking community better get organized because Preserve Calavera is and they don't like us very much.
