I scanned the pro mountain bike article from this months outside magazine regarding the governments ban on bicycles in wilderness areas.
Follow the thumbnail to a full resolution of the one page article.

"study after study has found the trail impact of mountain bikers to be equal to or less than that caused by hikers and far less than equestrians"

Also any trails that bikers have access to will probably be better maintained (at no cost to the state) than if left to be "environmentally protected"

Thanks for posting that article. I found a copy online that's a little easier to read.

And have yet to see a hiker or equestrian trail day at any park to help fix erosion and other environmental issues

We could learn a thing or two from the folks up north.

"The history of Comfortably Numb should interest communities wrestling with mountain bike issues. From the usual Whistler rogue beginnings, it was accepted by local and provincial governments and is now protected as part of our official trail network."

Here is the trail in reference:

another one called "Kill Me Thrill Me"

There are 100's more w/ the same government support. We can preach all day long about getting involved but it only goes so far. We are working against a broken system that is only getting worse.

Can you even imagine the state parks having something like this on their website?

I hate the government! Would it really be so hard for the President to take two fucking minutes to sign an executive order stating that the Wilderness Act was misinterpreted and human powered transport is now allowed in Wilderness designated areas. I'll even type it up for him.

The "ban" is from an 1890's law that says "any mechanized vehicle" isn't allowed on trails. The wilderness refuge managers all agree that bicycles are NOT mechanized vehicles and that the law is meant for motorcycles. IMBA is working to correct this.

If MTB'rs will unite on this and get a petition going and call our congressmen - one for US gov't and one for State gov't since each has the same law - we could win this........

http://www.imba.com/news/action_alerts/ ... s_mtb.html

Somewhere on IMBA's site is a letter you can sign that goes to your area's representative. I know in East County that Duncan Hunter is pro-MTB. Sending a letter of support helps him............

Support IMBA - at least get on the mailing list.....

Here's an interesting site with a funny name...

http://www.thecomputersmith.com/wilderness4all/

These folks want to bring a LOT more W ilderness to San Diego County.

I was told that bikers are welcome on Wilderness trails. Wait for it....
they just have to leave their bikes at home.

See the map here:

Ha! But the guy's a "cyclist"!

The "Computer Smith" is Geoffrey Smith, former President of the San Diego Chapter of the Sierra Club and former Chair of the Los Pen CAC. That's an old website...hadn't visited it in years.

Ah yes, the "shrimp whisperer."

He's trying to get W traction with Darrel Issa and Duncan Hunter.

We should all reserve spots for a specific date and all show up with our bikes (on a bike legal trail of course)
