Thought I would post about my recent trip to MT Hough. Many of you know about downiville, but MT Hough is a sweet 11 mile 3500ft descent. The trail is called Huff or Huff and Puff. It can be shuttled, about a 30 min shuttle. Or if your crazy you can climb up the fireroad and descend although makes for a pretty long day. Its kept up by the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship.

I hadn't known about this trail, but with many of the trails in tahoe still covered in snow, I was invited on this ride. I at first met in Truckee and didn't realize we'd be driving to Quincy to ride(over an hour away). About 20 of us carpooled around 6 vehicles so we could do two shuttles. I unfortunately did not get to do a second run as I had to take my bike apart to do the shuttle and ended up losing my end cap for the wheel. After you finish riding and if your headed back to Reno/Graeagle/Truckee/Tahoe I would stop by the brewing lair in Graeagle. It's not obvious off the highway besides a van parked indicating the entrance but is a sweet place in the woods, open area to just kick back for the rest of the day. It pry gets pretty hot in the summer. It is like a camping vibe but with a brewery! They have BBQ's on a first come basis and other outdoor games like disc golf. A pretty unique place Id say.

The trail begins with a little climb, and starts a good 4-5 miles descent in the woods. Not technical by any means and as fast as you want to make it. Pure singletrack. This leads you back to an opening where you can regroup. After that is another little climb and then another 5 miles of downhill. There is a short jump section that I was told was new and similar to a bike park trail. As you get to the bottom it becomes steeper and a lot of berms built into the side hill while your riding on some shale rock. It gets somewhat exposed and you can see the American Valley. The trail ends on the spanish creek for a nice dip after the ride.

Overall it was a great ride, I brought the gopro but unfortunately left the sim card out so no videos and only this photo of crystal lake at the very top of Mt Hough. I'd definitely recommend shuttling this trail if you are able to in addition to a Downiville trip or Mills peak. One of my friends asked why we weren't riding downiville(besides some of the top being covered in snow still), well after the ride he realized why. Currently Mills peak has a ton of downed trees. I wish I ventured out more when I was living in Reno but that was before I had a trail bike and was only a DH shuttle/bike park rat. Just thought I'd share another trail for those that always head to downiville area. I would warn though I guess it gets pretty hot in the summer. Last weekend was perfect weather and Id imagine it is awesome for fall riding.

Nice to learn of another great trail near Graeagle (you reading this Harley?). And +1 for the Brewing Lair. Love that spot. Thanks for the report!

Thanks....I saw this trail on the Sierra Buttes Trail Map I ordered online while planning a Downieville trip. We're still looking for a 3rd day option up there ourselves.
