I recall nothing but pavement is allowed because it's a national park.

Not exactly. But no singletrack. It's not a MTB destination that's for sure, but if you're going to be there anyway, you can ride the dirt roads (see link below, then click on "backcountry roads"). I've done some riding there. Geology Tour Rd & Berdoo Canyon area were okay. I wish they'd open up some singletrack...

You're in JT: climb, boulder, or hike.

The goat trails above Palm Springs are the nearest mtb trails I found when I looked into it several years ago. Fun; but, out of the way if you're tight on time.

^^^^ this is solid advice.
JT isnt worth anything when it comes to mtb. trust me, i grew up in Palm Springs and went to JT many a times (still do).
hiking and exploring by foot is what JT is all about. not to mention the super bad ass campsites (one of them in specific is nestled in among the boulders, truly spectacular at night with a lit fire).
as for mtb in the vicinity, the goat trail he describes are world class riding. fyi, its lotsa climbing to get up to the top, but they are one of my favorite rides in the PS area and well worth the pain.
i usually talk myself into going straight up Dunn Rd, but be prepared to embrace the suck the entire way up. this lets you pop out above Wild horse and what we call the Hana Montana sections (mtbbill calls them something similar i think) and it makes it out to be a much shorter and condensed version of the Palm Canyon Epic.
its been forever since i rode this, but now is the ideal time for it. the temps are really nice in PS right now.

+1 on the excellent campsites.

Around T'giving there will be a quarter moon, so star-gazing should be pretty decent. Bring a star map and telescope if you can get your hands on one. Doesn't even need to be a good telescope to see plenty of stuff -- we saw the rings around Saturn out there using a cheap telescope from Walmart.

I will def be hiking on foot and enjoying the rock formations with the family.
