Unfortunately I moved to a place that doesnt respect or appreciate cycling (esp. MTB) as much as San Diego does.

Just kidding, its pretty rad in Bend.

Only my third time down the trail, the footage could have been better, but I was simply hoping to convey how much non-stop-fun the riding is here.

Go fuck yourself San Die.... I mean, take care guys.

Good for you. I love the riding up there and it's actually one the areas on my short list for when I check out of SD in 3-5 years. I just love the dirt up there. It's like they made their own special mulch to line the trails to provide constant grip and also keep the trails from getting muddy at the same time.

The riding down in Oakridge was my favorite in all of Oregon. The Tire Mountain Trail which is a spur off off the world famous Alpine Trail is my all time favorite trail.

if you don't mind answering what you do for a living up there?

When I was 18 (many years ago sadly) I almost purchased river front property in Sunriver. Still think about that mistake

Thanks guys, Im just having your run of the mill mid-life crisis.

I don't have a career anymore. I began to realize that if I didnt start to do the things I actually want to do, I might not ever do them. So I packed my retirement account and I'm going to put myself through school, something I've always wanted to do, but never done.

Fun fact: Fresh Squeezed IPA tastes better in bottles than it does on tap.

^^Love that. Very inspirational. Congrats.

A non-biking buddy of mine just did a 4-week RV trip in Oregon and spent a couple of days in Bend. He noted there seems to be a pretty big divide between the haves and the have-nots there. It seemed to put a damper on his enthusiasm for the place. Have you noticed the same thing? I reckon if he were a mtb'er enjoying those trails he may overlooked something like that (if true).

Couldn't that be said about most cities? LA, San Barbara, Honolulu, Palm Springs, San Diego. They all have "different" areas based on income and the gap has only increased to a further divide

With all due respect Avid but.....you gotta be f'in kidding me!! Have you been to Rancho Santa Fe? Del Mar? La Jolla? or pretty much anywhere else north of I-8? Now go south of I-8 and look at southeast San Diego, San Ysidro and downtown near Petco Park. After you do that, you'll see what a big divide between the haves and have nots is all about. Bend doesn't hold a candle to the disparity see in San Diego County. In my trips to Bend, I don't think I saw anybody that would qualify as "homeless" when compared to those living on the streets at 17th & Imperial in downtown San Diego. Bend has a bunch of hippies who might look homeless up there but if so, they're the cleanest homeless people I've seen.

If you go to www.city-data.com and spend any time at all on the Bend forum, you will see (2) things. One is that the great divide is the fault of Californians moving up there to retire. They are the have's driving up the housing prices and making everything unaffordable for the locals. The other issues they harp about repeatedly is that fact that there is no jobs outside of the tourism industry...and none of those jobs pay any $$ so it's a vicious cycle. The real bottom line which is already pointed out by others is....the divide you speak of exists EVERYWHERE. If you're an Obama fan, you think that's a bad thing and the have's are selfish for not sharing with the others. If you're anti-Obama, maybe you think those have-nots should learn to live with the decisions they may have made. If they want to become a "have", go back to school to get a degree in a field where you too can became a "have". A lot of those have-nots in Bend (and ski bums worldwide) CHOSE to move where they did to live a simpler life, living with less amenities so they could RIDE (rather that be skis, a snowboard or a bike) rather than go to college or work full time.

In all fairness, it was his friend that stated that divide. Bend was like that 40 years ago when I was thinking of that property and working up there.

Apologies for inadvertently derailing your thread Dingus.

I've never been to Bend, so cannot comment personally- only relaying an observation from a buddy and inquiring if Dingus, as a new transplant, has observed the same or not. According to my road-tripping friend, there were other towns/areas in Oregon, like Mt. Hood and Brookings on the Southern Coast for example, that did not have the social class friction he noticed in Bend. I believe his comments to me were based on surprise, and perhaps some disappointment that there was an undercurrent of anger between exactly the groups you mention K2rider: the locals, many of whom are relegated to the service/tourism industry at lower wages vs., the wealthier transplants that have been moving in.

I think we all know and expect an area the size of San Diego County is going to have a large divide, which you can see clearly on a wealth/income distribution map. Bend on the other hand has been promoted as a mountain biking and outdoor enthusiasts utopia. And for folks like me that have yet to go experience it firsthand, the 2nd hand observations I received were a surprise.

I think there are a lot of similarities between San Diego and Bend, both in mindset and the mixing of wealth.

The distinction is easy to see, and I think the sentiment is generally negative, but I don't know how much of a divide has been created.

I can see where friction may arise, but as was said this will be the case anywhere, if not now, then eventually.

As you alluded, it wont be so easy to buy that property in Sunriver now.
