Busted 2 ribs, bruised another, and one of my floating ribs is displaced. Not the first time this has happened, but what I heard from the doc was new to me.

He said that since it hurts to take normal breaths, my lungs will be susceptible to atelectesis. Something about the alveoli in my lungs closing up if I don't continue to take deep breaths on occasion. He wants me to take 5-10 slow deep breaths an hour to prevent this.

Been taking 1/4 pill of vicodin every hour and doing the breathing exercise as soon as I feel the effect of the pill. So far so good.

Has anyone else heard of this happening?

Yes.
Pneumonia is also a concern when you can't take full and deep breaths.
They used to tape your ribs when you either broke or cracked them, but found out that restricting your breathing has its own problems.
As an athlete (or at least a Mtb'r ;) ) our lungs are used to being used and when you suddenly tell them that they are no longer needed (so to speak) there is even a greater risk of problems.

Ask me how I know....

i've taken quite a few spills and had quite a few accidents in my 30 years....when i was 13 yrs old i broke my neck and the doc said i would never walk/dance normal again....thank God he was wrong. when i was 18 i broke my nose and orbital socket along with my jaw, last year ago I compressed my vertebrate and have had random neck/back pain since.....

however, 2 years ago i broke a couple ribs and separated the remainder of the ones that didnt break....THAT was the worst pain EVER!
as most know, i hate a few people on this earth, and everyday I wake up and wish someone would shove a fuckin road cone up their ass...but i would NEVER wish broken ribs on them...thats just cruel.

heal up quick bro and like Gman said, dont laugh, sneeze or even squeeze hard when you shit.....you will REALLY regret that squeeze...

Thanks for the link. The only thing I've ever worn that really protected my ribs was this specific 661 roost protector. Crashed hard on my chest once, and for all intents and purposes, I shoulda broke my sternum and a bunch of ribs... don't wear it anymore cuz wearing roost protectors for DH is so 2009.

You should of ducked when the right hook was thrown

Hang in there. Ribs just suck. You can't really set them, fix them, or stop them from hurting. One of the guys I ride with is in the same boat right now. His are not as bad as yours but it slows him way down.

Sure do. I was thoroughly chewed out by my doc for not taking my pain meds (and therefore not breathing deeply enough. Hang in there. Broken ribs suck, don't sneeze, don't puke, don't laugh too much and you'll be back riding before you know it.

 I got nausiated when I took a Vico on an empty stomach yesterday after work. Dry heaved a couple of times. I think the only reason I didn't actually puke was because of the pain.
