I go in on Monday for surgery to fix a broken scaphoid with necrosis, I searched and know 2 or 3 of you have had similar surgery.

Curious how soon after surgery you are up and moving around normally? I think he said I'm getting a vascular graft plus the graft from the hip bone and I've heard the hip bone ends up hurting more than the broken scaphoid. Will I be back up and fully functional the next day? I know I'll have a splint / cast for 3-6 months with elec. bone growth stimulator too - more just wondering about the immediate recovery after surgery?

I had the same exact injury and underwent a similar course for treatment (bone/vascular graft, 2 hardware pins, bone stimulator). After 16 weeks in a cast I did 6 weeks of pysical therapy. It's amazing how weak and stiff my wrist was. PT was excruciating.

That was about 3 years ago and till this day I don't have complete range of motion in my left hand. I can't bend my wrist to do push ups and according to my surgeon I would be a bad waiter.

Due to my line of work I was unable to work for almost 20 weeks! So I relied on my accrued paid time off and state dissability. although I do have health insurance Financially my injury depleted my savings because of monthly bills (mortgage, car, etc)

good luck and best wishes for speedy recovery.

I broke my Scaphoid in April of 09, the first operation was a failure, they put in one ti screw that in my opinion was to long that was protruding outside of the bone hitting the adjacent bone preventing the Scaphoid to heal properly, my second operation was on December 14th, this time with a different Orthopedic Surgeon, the Surgeon removed the screw and put in three small pins and did a bone graph from my Humerus, I also have the bone growth stimulator, my next appointment to take X Rays is April 13th, that will be 20 weeks in this cast plus 10 weeks with the first cast from the first operation.

Heal quick man! It's going to hurt, but all will be good in time. I just had my 10 month follow up today and the Doc is afraid I'm going to be dealing with on again off again chronic pain in the joint.

you guys may want to look at having some structural integration work done. i did something similar in high school and was plagued with horrible range of motion and pain for years. sometimes i would only have 10% motion in my left wrist... having my forearm worked on cleared up all of my issues.

Wow. There are a few here that have or had the same issue. I go in for a ct scan of my wrist tomorrow. They already confirmed it's scaphoid fracture, but they need to determine if its necrosis. I don't know if I'll be able to handle the long road to recovery. :( It's a bitch of an injury, it feels more like a bad sprain.

Good luck - seems like necrosis makes it like 10x harder to fix, mine had started breaking up into lots of little pieces.

I accidentally let the pain med totally wear off today in between doses - OMG that hurt waiting for the next pill to kick in! One day down, 89 to 179 more to go lol.

So I'm guessing that tour of the Scripps/Poway Parkway animal tunnel and surrounding areas will have to wait?

Heal well, heal soon.

And next time, tuck and roll!
