I read this recent article by Gene Hamilton of Better Ride, and he said these "exercises" (really more like prolonged stretches) really helped his back. I have a problem committing to yoga classes and exercise regimes, so I am hopeful these will pay off for me too. Pretty simple stuff you can do almost anywhere.

^^^ That's a timely post. My back has been killing me lately. In fact, I named today's ride "That Damn Lordotic Curve." I'll have to give the feet-against-the-wall move a go.

I've been mostly off the bike all summer due to recurring back pain. I hurt it last winter working on Black Mtn trails, and it never really recovered. I guess at my age that trail work is over.

The last week in particular has been complete hell.

I found this YouTube video just a couple of days ago which has helped me a bunch. The first session was excruciating pain, but it has lessened with each session since then. And I get a lot more mobility already. I'm using a tennis ball because that's what i have.

And she is really easy on the eyes too. ;)

Just two days of using the stretches in Dan's videos, and I have already experienced significant relief. The one that has proven especially helpful for me is lying perpendicular to something on which I can rest my legs. It's astounding (at least to me) that such a passive activity can yield such a good result.

If I don't continue to experience relief, I guess I will have to go Paul's route and subject myself to some excruciating pain.

I'm not judging, Paul - different strokes for different folks....

I was recently diagnosed with degenerated disks in the lower lumbar due to scoliosis that will eventually encroach upon the nerves. Dr told me I need core workouts and yoga or pilates, I think mountain biking can provide a core strengthening what do you think. ?????????????????????

I talked with a trainer who told me that cycling is not a good core exercise. If you stay in the saddle, your torso stays in the same position all the time.

If you have spinal issues, you should follow a separate core strengthening regimen. You could possibly ask your doc to prescribe some physical therapy so you can have them craft you a core strengthening plan.

cycling has not contributed to any core strength for me. a recent regiment of push-ups and planks are helping. But cycling alone? Not so much. In a street fight, my legs would kick the shit out of my core.
