Seems that I didn't quite duck low enough yesterday while going pretty fast in this DH section. Nailed a large 8-inch diameter branch that jumped out at me. Completely shocked me, and all I saw was bright light followed by blackness and then hot searing pain in my skull. After 15 minutes of recovering on the side of the trail, I made the climb back out of there and headed home. Nice crack in the helmet, which did its job and saved my life. Thank you, Giro.

As a precaution, I went to get my noggin checked out. Definitely have a concussion, but no signs of internal bleeding and the X-Ray came back negative for fractured vertebrae. Just the same, the doctor told me no strenuous activity for a week.

I seem to have contradicted my username...

Close call...! With all the news about concussions lately, the doctor's advice seems pretty reasonable for a week.

here is the offending tree. Usually can duck my 6' body under that one, but I was carrying a little too much speed out of the corner (at least for my skills).

Should have taken a picture with the bike underneath the tree so you could see scale; there's less clearance than it looks.

After shaking the stars out of my head, I did go back up and tried it again, just to prove to myself that I could actually do it. Did fine that time! If at first you don't succeed....

Of course, I didn't tell that to my doctor OR my wife!

Looks like what I call the "Midget" trail, so overrated!

Glad you're more or less ok. I've caught that tree a few times myself but thankfully haven't slammed into it full bore...yet. But then again, I go pretty slow.

That photo is interesting. I've been pissed off a few times to find overhanging trees cut back on trails, because I like preserving trees and think ducking can be part of the challenge. But then, I'm half a foot shorter than No Bad Rides. Cutting that tree down would be a major change in that trail, but if I had hit my head that hard, maybe I'd feel differently. Hmmm...never thought about this before, but I dont think I'd mind so much if some tall person felt like engineering a well-drained dip to gain a little more clearance.

I grazed my helmet and solidly caught my camelbak on that tree during a night ride. Night rides there with only handlebar lights are a trip! You never know what is around the next bend.

I've banged my head on that damn branch several times. Until you really know the area well it can be easy to misjudge where you can open it up and where you can't. There are also a few shoulder grabbers that can spin you around pretty good. Any Mtber is in general larger than a migrant on foot, the OG trailbuilders there.

I can't remember where that place is either, but wherever it is, it tore my shoulder out. And just to add insult to injury, a few years ago it gave me a face full of hamburger.

I guess it's a good thing I can't remember where that is......

I think that's the culprit that put a good dent in Ryan's nice clean POC helmet.
