Sony now I think everyone knows I broke my clavicle, it's basically a mid level fracture I believe. I have my surgery scheduled next weds. But I am debating on whether I want to get it fixed. Looking for opinions both pros and cons of surgery/no surgery.

Thanks!

Get that shit done. Surgery will only take a few hours and you'll heal better and faster.

What is your reason for not wanting surgery?
Surgery hopefully will align the bones for a quicker, and better recovery, a plate may be placed to help with alignment, and stability, then removed at a later date; that depends on the severity of the fracture.
No surgery and the bones may not line up properly, take a little longer to heal, and may be more susceptible to reinjury. Since it's understood, to get to the NEXT LEVEL you'll have to crash some more. Good luck.

Get the surgery! Broke my collar bone 3 years ago, it took 3 weeks to "heal", I had pain in my shoulder for over a year, and I still have a gnarly bump where it broke. Ryan Mathews broke his, got surgery, and was back playing NFL level football in 3 weeks.

absolutely get the surgery. Nagging injuries that don't heal up perfectly really start sucking as you get older.

Well as of right now I feel good, can use my arm pretty well, albeit I pry shouldn't be. Definitely the bones are not going to line up, Doc already said that I would pry have a slight lower shoulder. I mean I will most likely break it again but I dont know the risks of something else happening if the current fracture isn't fixed.

Ah Ill pry just get it fixed, definitely a wake up call though about priorities. Might have to start taking it easy and not trying for the Next Level, lol, since my career(and job) may not wait especially if it was a more serious accident.

Not trying to burst any bubbles grant, but chances aren't you won't race on a level that you are sponsored or getting paid by a company to ride full time. Don't hurry to the next level, just ride, have an awesome time with your friends, and keep your 9-5 to fund the addiction.

Get it fixed. You will be happier in the long run to do it the right way.

I can't agree more with A_street.

That being said I too have broken my clavicle. My break was pretty severe almost puncturing my lung. My fracture was set by the doc, by doing some serious pulling and stretching ( I could have killed that SOB that day ). I wore a brace to try and keep the bones set as they should be and none the less I still have a large overlap. I must say that I feel no residual pain, and def don't feel that my clavicle is more prone to breakage.

My break and yours are completely different. I had a simple break, yours is in 3 pieces. I have no idea how they could line up properly bieng in 3 pieces. I think it is quiet normal to be intimidated by the idea of going under the knife, but reality is that the chances are silm to none that anything bad would ever happen.

A_street hit the nail on the head. There comes a time in everyones riding career (progressive riders) that you must take a step back and be comfortable in your own skin. That def doesn't mean that your progression will stop, it will happen naturally.

Get the surgery my friend.

Lol Aron, the Next Level is Abdullah and I's progression to becoming faster/better riders. I don't have a conviction to race anyways. Have done it before and don't enjoy the mentality. I ride to ride, enjoy new places, new people, new experiences. It has introduced me to a great group of new riders in SD since I moved.

That being said, I want to be the fastest SOB I can be on two wheels. Just feel I have to slow down a bit, I have one chance to give my self a pretty promising future where I could ride everyday if everything works out. Just have to learn to balance my career and adrenaline rushes.

I am just recovered from a collarbone fracture and sort of regret not having surgery. The main reason I didn't get it was because it didn't seem necessary and the doctors were doing the whole CYA "may or may not heal better" routine. That and they said I'd likely want to have the plate removed later, so it really was TWO surgeries.

Now I've got a small bone spur and the doctor has told me it healed "fine" but will likely be arthritic "but you won't ever notice as it's not load bearing."

FYI mine was not a typical collarbone break, I had a fracture near the shoulder end by the acromion. Also, they told me if it does bug me they'd just lop off that inch of bone, which is what they do for arthritis.

My regret is mainly about the time to heal, I'm positive I'd have been back in action a lot earlier in hindsight.

Well now I have a better understanding of your riding goals. Heal up and then just wear the protective equipment you need to stay safe.

Personally i'd rather be a bit uncomfortable in pads and be able to walk away from a crash than not wear them and get hurt. Imagine if I hadn't worn my leatt that day at balboa...

Being hurt = no progress to next level

I have goals homie! I need to push to the next level. That is the only way I get a boner!
Road ride 5 days a week, and mountain bike 5 days a week.
Now that I have health insurance, I'll be pushing it.
Why?
B/c crack kills.

Ya I was going back and forth on purchasing one for the last month. It might have helped a little bit in this crash but I think both my shoulder and helmet caused the fracture.

But definitely buying one for the future. And definitely riding jumps slower when people for some reason decide to change a perfectly good jump to begin with.

Haha Crack does kill. If I keep injuring myself doesn't matter how much insurance I have ill be broke from paying surgeries.
