Argh! I've gone and done it again -- a bulging cervical disk (upper back/neck), which is causing severe pain in my back, shoulder, arm and hand. I've had it before, so I know that it means a good month or so off the bike. It has been a week so far and I'm back doing my PT exercises, but I already feel myself losing the edge that I've worked so hard for all summer.

Oh well, I guess it sucks to get old, eh? Hopefully this is a quick recovery and I'll get back on the dirt soon.

My wife just had a similar issue (a bit higher up on her back, but got acupuncture and it was sorted in 2 visits. She goes to the Beach Community Acupuncture in OB (above NOON and 2 min walk to Raglan Public house). They do sessions pretty cheap as well ($30 for first visit and $20 for every visit after).

Hope it helps.

Hey No Bad Rides, I had the exact same problems a couple years ago. Extremely herniated disk at my c5-6 and it was bulging on top of the nerve root causing damage to the nerve and pain/numbness from my neck to my finger tips. The worst part was the MRI revealed that it was also bulging into my spinal cord and my neurosurgeon said if it ruptured(which it was on its way to) that it would rupture into my spinal cord, leaving me paralyzed from the neck down. I opted to get the disc removed and replaced with an artificial disc instead of fusion. I'm close to 100%, but there's some residual numbness and pain but not nearly the amount I had prior to the surgery. Doctor said it is most likely from the damage from the nerve root having the disc bulging on it for so long. But the back spasms are almost all gone, didn't lose rotation/range in my neck and that pain that felt like someone shoving an ice pick into my trap muscle is all gone.
I know you said you've gone through this before and I hope the PT and non-evasive treatment works, but if it gets really bad, this option might help.
Hope it gets better and fast. Heal up, you too Mpmffitz with your leg!

Yeah, unfortunately I've been through all this before. Couple of years ago I had a herniation at C6/C7 and bulge at C4/C5. Three months of meds and PT resolved that one, but I still have no feeling in my index finger. Few months later I had a lower back problem with a massive rupture at L5/S1 which got so bad I could no longer walk. Meds, massage, PT, accupuncture, etc. all failed, and I ended up getting a laminotomy/discectomy. 6 months off the bike, I finally recovered to around 80% (hey, I'll take what I can get).

Disappointing now that the neck thing is coming back. It makes it worse that I know what I'm in for...

Anyway, I have a positive attitude and am promising myself a new bike as a motivation for recovery!

I had a double laminectomy at L4/5 and L5/S1 in '91 and a tune up in '09. Now having neck issues after a big crash a few weeks ago so I sympathize with you. Time to get on the spin bike so you can keep the fitness if your neck can handle it.

Damn, you had an edge? I can't even remember what that feels like...

Hope you heal up really fast and can get back on the bike.
