Brutal, heal up fast. The issue is lack of circulation in that area. At least they are putting the screws and plate in now rather than waiting to see if it heals without them. That is what they did with my wife and it was 5 months before she was out of the boot! All of that was because they waited 4 months to do the surgery.

I cracked the top bone in the foot, inside what was left of my ankle 9/5/94. I sometimes still feel it. Sucks getting old. Follow your orthropod's advice, the ER docs won't know anything about this worth telling you.

Heal quick, get a stationary when the ortho says it's ok. On the plus side, you'll be able to do bar dips until the strong men puke after crutching around for the healing process.

I broke my heel over a year ago in a similar situation/crash. It was a pretty severe calcaneous fracture and they put 10 screws and a plate in. To be perfectly honest, it was the hardest thing I've ever had to go through physically and mentally. Depending on your situation, it's non weight bearing for a few months and they say 8-12 months for complete healing.

Do what the docs say, hit the PT hard and as early as possible, don't let that thing stiffen up as it's hard to reverse (i'm learning the hard way). I'm pretty much back to normal, still gets sore after a long walk or run. Ironically, mtn biking is the thing that doesn't make it sore:)

That's all I got, PM me if you want any enouragement or advice. Sending postive healing vibes your way!
