Went for an Easy ride on my 2 day old Santa Cruz Tallboy LT, was on my way down from the tabletop at Calaveras, about half way, theres a trench with an old fence post with concrete block. I was doing about 30mph, got target fixation, dropped into the gulley, I think hit the concrete block, went down, head first into the ground. At some point the crank hit me in the head, cause I have chainring gouge in my helmet. I seriously checked to make sure I could move all appendages. Walked it off enough to ride back to car and drive to the hospital.

After four hours, a CT scan and some other x rays, I have a cracked rib, and very hurt muscles in my back and neck. Got to spend an hour on backboard and neck brace till scans were done.

Gotta inspect the bike, I knowI have bent brake lever, almost looks like fork tubes are bent backwards, but need to inspect tomorrow.

Will be ordering another Giro helmet as this one is toast, but worked well.

Did you ride by yourself?
How is your bike?
Did you get it on video, since everyone I believe is mandatory to have one nowadays?

Have you thought about how you will build confidence to get through that spot at the same rate of speed next time?

Have others crashed at that spot?

Dang! Sorry to hear about this. On the plus side, it sounds like your injuries could have been much worse. Hopefully the back and neck will be okay soon. The ribs will take a while. The bike can be fixed good as new. In the meantime, I hope you can still squeeze into that new car. Don't go getting carried away with it! Good luckand speedy healing.

That's nasty, but it sounds like it could have been a lot worse. Hope you're back in proper working order soon.

Thanks for the wishes. Unfortunately Idon't have video on the bike. That was one of the first thing's I said to myself. I think it was a pretty epic crash. I would have like to see how the crank hit my head.

Thanks, status is that my rib doesnt hurt quite at bad as everything else. Worst part is actually my neck and shoulders. But I guess thats to be expected since I landed on my head. I think because I broke the 2nd rib from top kinda near the spine it hurts more with certain shoulder movement than it does with breathing, coughing or sneezing. Actually a couple sneezing the other day caused a good pop in my back, adding some relief!

Sometimes the bike is good therapy; the San Luis rey path is flat and smooth.
