The deceased rider was S.J. Brooks (age 32), and the survivor was Isaac Sederbaum (31). The cougar (name unknown) was estimated to be 3 or 4 yrs old, male and appeared to be emaciated. There's been speculation that a territorial dispute with another male may have driven this cat to a new area where he couldn't find adequate prey (deer or elk) which may have led to this attack.

Responding officers found the cougar had dragged the victim into some brush behind a fallen log, possibly his den. He was standing over the victim when they arrive. Onee officer fired and missed (prob using a handgun). Later, with the help of tracking dogs, game wardens found him up in a tree and they took him down with a rifle. They're still awating results of a necropsy but there's little doubt that it's the same cat.
