I don't whether it's just that time of the year, or whether a bunch of people have just discovered these trails, but they sure are getting a lot of traffic, morning, noon, and night.

The trails are holding up very well for the amount of traffic they get. I guess that's a testament to the riders who do maintenance on the trails because they love them, not because they're drawing a paycheck from the city or the county.

I was going to lament that these trails aren't part of MTRP, but now that I think about it, that's probably a good thing . . . .

I imagine they are, just not officially. There is a sign at the T intersection from the mast lot that says "spring canyon" with an arrow pointing towards it. Theres also a little trailhead kiosk right there under the freeway leading into spring. If the MTRP boundaries ended at the 52 why would they have a little information kiosk dealio right there? A busy weekend has 20-30 vehicles with mountain bikers heading into the park at any given time. If there was an issue with riding there I think it would have came up already

The last I heard (last year), MTRP had acquired some land north of the 52 and was in talks with the Marines about acquiring some more, but as far as I know that's not a done deal. I believe that near the ridge between Spring and Oak, and everything to the west, is still Marine land. It's also my understanding that some of the land in Spring Canyon north of the 52 doesn't belong to MTRP or the Marines, but to the private entity that operates the Santee landfill. If someone out there (paging Gardner) knows more about the current ownership status of that area, I'd really like to get an update.

Attached is a link to the most current map of MTRP park boundaries I've been able to find online.

That's basically what I heard from Gardner last year at the SDMBA "Take A Kid Mountain Biking" event (great event BTW  ).

At this point the military may remain in possession of the property while allowing the public access to it. Don't know if or when they will transfer it to the park.

Yup, Gardner would be the man on the front lines, so to speak, on anything current.

And yeah, it is getting crowded there.

One would hope that the high traffic would be a sign of what kind of trails people like to ride. Fortuna mountain sees very little in the way of hikers or anyone really a few actual trails wouldnt hurt. I drive home on the 52 and always scan the trails for anyone on them and have seen hikers once, MTB'ers a dozen times.

<slaps himself> Ok Los less talking, more action. Back to your regularly scheduled programs

That was a subtle/feeble attempt at humor, aimed at getting a certain snake-fearing, almost ex-DT, single-speeder to join the ride. I'm not going to name names, but his initials are Barcy . . . .

did he show, or did he know you planted your pet snakes all around the trails to keep the traffic down and scare his silly butt?

EDIT:

Nope, all gone.

Someone needs to escape the half sized humans and hang out with the big people a little more often.

Nice going, Joe. No he didn't show up, and with that little reminder I doubt if he ever will.

besides, little people are more, well, tolerant of my many quirks.
